Virginia Ray Obituary

Virginia Mae Ray, affectionately known as "Gin," was born on December 19, 1940, in Polk County, North Carolina, to the late Ella Mae Staley Whiteside and the late William Briscoe. She was educated in the Polk County school system, where a life marked by warmth, resilience, and quiet strength began to unfold.

Virginia was full of life, with a presence that could brighten any room. Known for a warm spirit and engaging personality, she was always ready to share a conversation, a laugh, or a story. She found joy in life's simple pleasures painting, playing bingo, and spending cherished time in church. A deep love for cooking and baking became an expression of care, with every meal prepared as an offering of love. Shopping for beautiful clothing brought great joy, and the color red reflected the bold and vibrant nature of that spirit.

For seven years, Virginia opened both home and heart as a devoted foster parent, providing love, stability, and compassion to those entrusted to her care. That nurturing presence extended far beyond family, leaving a lasting imprint on many lives.

She was a faithful member of Zion Grove AME Zion Church, where faith remained a steady foundation.

Virginia was preceded in death by siblings, Elizabeth Moore, Juanita Hines, Louise Carson, Sherman Whiteside, and Terry Whiteside, and niece, Dr. Sherry Dodd.

Left to cherish a legacy of love are daughter, LaTonya Littlejohn of Union City, Georgia; grandchildren, Deonte Ray and Daisha Littlejohn, both of Spartanburg, South Carolina; siblings, Velma Dodd of Spartanburg, South Carolina and Willie Ann Mayes of Forest City, North Carolina; great grandchild, Kaylani Ray; the Williams family; special grandson, Dequan Campbell; special cousin, Jackie Copeland; special friend, Keith Landrum; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

Virginia transitioned peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Golden Age Operations. Though now at rest, the love given so freely will continue to live on in every life touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
