Thomas Whitmire Obituary

Thomas Earle Whitmire, 94, devoted husband of the late Sally Seeger Whitmire, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025. Born and raised in Greenville, SC, he was a son of the late William and Grace Myers Whitmire. A proud veteran, Thomas served in the United States Air Force where he achieved the rank of Airman First Class. His patriotism and dedication were a significant part of his identity, instilling a sense of pride that would carry throughout his life. After his service, Thomas committed himself to a fulfilling career as a Letter Carrier with the United States Postal Service, where he was known for his unwavering dedication and warm spirit. Colleagues and members of the community alike will remember him for his friendly demeanor and reliability. A man of many passions, Thomas cherished his faith, his family, and the simple joys of life. In his retirement, he could often be found "piddling around" in his woodworking shop, lovingly crafting cherished pieces, or immersing himself in his fascination with antique engines. He also enjoyed reading. Thomas was a dedicated lifelong member of The Church of West Gantt, where he was active in the Billy Batson Sunday School Class. His memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of his daughter, Cindy Allison and husband, David; adoring grandchildren, Devin Burrell (Amber), and Shelly Evans (Jason). He was Papa to his precious great-grandchildren, Rayanna Evans and Ansley Burrell; his beloved pup, the love of his life, Lucy; and many other loving nieces and nephews, cousin, and his church family. In addition to his parents and loving wife, Thomas was preceded in death by his daughter, Tracey W. Godfrey, grandchildren, Amanda and Joshua Godfrey; siblings, Sarah Williams, Don and Ed Whitmire. A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at The Church at West Gantt followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Burial will Military Honors be in held in Graceland Cemetery West. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels of Greenville County by visiting www.mealsonwheelsgreenville.org or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by visiting www.stjude.org Friends are encouraged to share their favorite memories of Thomas with the family by clicking on the button labeled "Share A Memory".
