John Cronin Obituary

The Cronin family fondly remembers their storyteller, John Cronin. Born in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland, son of a hackney driver, John immigrated to New York City in January 1958, often saying, "I died and went to heaven when I came to New York." That leap of faith, was the first of many leaps - he joined the Army and served in the 101st Airborne, leaping from planes as part of the Screaming Eagles. On October 20, 1962 he took the leap to begin 62 years of marriage with his wife Peggy, another intrepid Irish adventurer treading the streets of 1960s New York. John faced life with the focus and tenacity he honed as a champion boxer both in Ireland and later in the U.S. Army. He pursued continuing qualifications and degrees at numerous institutions, including Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He was a pioneer in the computer industry, bringing computing to banks in New York, and was one of the first recruited to bring computing to industries in Ireland, working with Aer Lingus in Dublin, Ireland. John's life brought him many places, and his stories feature his noteworthy adventures - from grueling marches in the Army to countless tales and traditions of his beloved Ireland. He was a leader in numerous Irish clubs and organizations throughout his life. He was the founder and chairman of the very first St. Patrick's Day Parade of Morristown, New Jersey. In addition, he founded the Pebble Creek's Irish Club in Goodyear, Arizona. John was a a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, as well as a Grand Knight at St. Maria Goretti Church in Scottsdale. Indeed, wherever John went, he was well-loved for his cheer, stories, confidence, and his remarkable loyalty to his family, friends and neighbors. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and brother. He is predeceased by his brothers Paddy and Martin, his daughter Ann, and his grandson Daniel. He is survived, dearly loved, and fondly remembered by his wife Peggy; his son John; his daughters Patricia and Deirdre; his grandchildren Sean, Ryan, Caitlin, Mary, William, and Benjamin; and his family in Ireland including his brothers Tommy, Des, and Michael, and sister Mary. Slán abhaile, Johnny. May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
