Shirley Roe Obituary

A much-loved mother, grandmother, sister and friend Shirley Waddell Roe, died suddenly on July 28, 2025. She was born on April 27,1945, in Greer, South Carolina. Shirley poured her heart into her family, nurturing her daughter, Amy Willcox; son-in-law, Thomas L. Willcox, Jr.; three granddaughters, Caroline McIvor Willcox, Emily Roe Willcox Fers (Tyler) and Elizabeth Law Willcox; sisters Hattie Colvin (Bobby) and Linda Sims (Bobby), and brother Ronnie Waddell (Becki). Shirley was predeceased by her parents, JD and Eva Mae Godfrey Waddell, Thomas A. Roe and Richard (Jerry) Gerald Tuck. Shirley's interests and passions enriched her life and the lives of those around her. From local agencies like Miracle Hill Ministries, to state think tanks like the South Carolina Policy Council and international movements with the Heritage Foundation she continued to advocate for free markets and individual liberties. A brilliant Mahjong player, she enjoyed teaching the game to family and friends. She played without exception every Monday afternoon. Shirley was adored by her "lunch bunch" friends, who will forever remember the laughter and joy she brought to their gatherings. Her faithful friend, Linda Rollins (who always appeared looking fabulous from head to toe bringing Mom's favorite Chick-Fil-A) was a special gift to Shirley and her family. Her commitment to community service shone brightly during her time as the Chairman of the Roe Foundation, Past member of The Christ Church Episcopal School (CCES) Board of Trustees, Past President of The Carillon Belles, Past President of The Greenville Garden Club, and Past Board Member of The Peace Center. A devoted member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Shirley's faith guided her through life's journey and inspired her to serve others selflessly. Her legacy of kindness and love will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she touched. A celebration of Shirley's remarkable life will take place on Friday, August 1, 2025, at St. Paul's Anglican Church at 12:00 p.m. As we gather to honor Shirley's memory, let us remember her vibrant spirit and the countless ways she enriched our lives. May her legacy continue to live on in the laughter shared among friends and the love within her family. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Miracle Hill Ministries. Friends are encouraged to share their favorite memories of Shirley with the family by clicking on the button labeled "Share A Memory".

Yesterday

My dear friend. My heart is broken. I have so many wonderful memories. I spent time with her when Tom had to have surgery in NYC. He personally made arrangements for us to enjoy brunch at his club at Top of the Towers. Yes, those Towers. That's memorable for many reasons. Shirley was always Shirley
She was one of the jewels that brought sparkle and light to me. I miss her.
