Shelby Phillips Obituary

Shelby Jean Phillips (née Walker), 86, of Greer, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. A loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, she will be deeply missed. Born to J.D. and Ruby Walker on December 7, 1938, in Central, South Carolina, Shelby was known for her faith, kindness, and generosity. She graduated from Daniel High School in Central and Draughon's Business College in Greenville. While working as an office administrator for the Agronomy Department at Clemson University, she met the love of her life, Col. (Ret) Ben Phillips, Jr. Shelby found joy in the Lord and by serving him and others, often sharing her love of hospitality and humor with her family and friends. Shelby is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Col. (Ret) Ben Phillips, Jr., her children, the Rev. Ben Phillips, III (Rebecca) and Dr. Michelle Hudspeth (Chuck), her grandchildren, Lauren Hudspeth, Sarah Hudspeth, Josh Phillips, Andrew Phillips, and Hannah Kate Phillips, and her sister Diane (Harley) Alexander, two nephews and three nieces, and numerous dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. A funeral service will be held at The Wood Mortuary on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held 10:00-10:45 a.m. before the service.
