Phil Byrne Obituary

Phillip John Byrne, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on July 5, 1954, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Phil lived a life rooted in love and integrity, guided by purpose, and filled with meaningful moments shared with the people he cared about most. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, Phil built a long and successful career in corporate finance at General Electric, retiring in 2015 after 37 years of dedicated service. His work took his family to many places-Utah, Texas, Georgia, Virginia, and South Carolina-but no matter where they landed, Phil made sure that home was always filled with love, laughter, and new adventures. In retirement, Phil embraced the chance to savor life with family and friends. He traveled often, tended beautiful gardens with his wife, Debbie, and spent countless joyful hours adventuring and playing with his beloved grandchildren, Landon and Hannah. Phil had an adventurous spirit and a passion for living life to the fullest. He was an avid drummer who had played since 7th grade, and he enjoyed many types of music. He also loved cycling, starting with mountain biking in Utah's Wasatch Mountains and later transitioning to road cycling. Some of his happiest hours were spent cycling side by side with his son, J.T., sharing thousands of miles and a deep bond along the way. Above all, Phil was a family man. He was a devoted, hands-on husband, dad, and "Poppa" who poured his heart into every relationship. Family always came first. His steady presence and boundless love will be remembered always. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Deborah Byrne; his children, Monica Holmes and her husband, Mike; J.T. Byrne; and Nicholas Byrne and his wife, Lauren; as well as his two grandchildren, Landon and Hannah Holmes. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings, Kris Jones (Jimi), Greg Byrne (Ann), Mike Byrne (Michelle), and Steve Byrne, who will miss his warmth, wisdom, and sense of humor. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sally Byrne, and his brother, David Byrne. His legacy of love, loyalty, and joyful living lives on in all who knew him. His adventurous spirit, love for music, and devotion to his family will forever shine brightly in our memories. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Southeast with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The National Shrine of St. Jude’s or Easterseals Redwood. Phil was one of my closest friends, we knew each other since grade school, played music together in a couple bands, traveled together in that endeavor and enjoyed many interesting and wonderful adventures for a number of years until Phil decided to return to school, ultimately ending up at GE and enjoyed a 37 year career with that company. We spoke often and kept in touch as he moved from Cincy to Dallas, et al until he and Debbie ended up in South Carolina.
We were looking forward to getting together again to play music this weekend with friends and relatives, but unfortunately that was not to be...Phil was an outstanding drummer, one of the best, but more so a great friend for many years. He will be sorely missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to Debbie and his family. Rest in Peace, my friend...

Phil and I were lucky enough to be part of a very tight, loving, creative, musical and funny friends group in our high school years in the late 60's and early 70´s. I have an especially warm memory of he and my then boyfriend Greg Kottman and me driving Greg´s B3 organ to a concert at EKU for Jethro Tull to use, with me on a stool in the middle of their front seats in Greg´s Volkswagon van (so dangerous!). I was laughing the whole way there and back because Greg Kottmann and Phil were like a comedy team, with Phil, as always, playing straight man to Greg. I got to reconnect with Phil a few years ago at the infamous Zink Invasion Jam session and I shared this memory with him. We talked about the great memories we have of that very formative time in our lives. It seemed that no time had passed since we´d last seen each other. Phil was to be at this year´s Zink Jam session happening this weekend. I can not tell you how much he will be missed, and how much his presence will be felt there. I am so sad for Debbie and the kids and grandkids and all his family and friends. He will be sorely missed by so many. Drum on Phil, keep on making rocking music in heaven. See you again some day.

Phil was a friend of my big brother and sister. And he was a bandmate of my big brother. He was an integral part of the Entourage that I used to enjoy being around the house when I was a kid. I remember him having a good sense of humor. He came to Jamaica with my family when I was 10, so I think he was 16, and we have some funny videos of him! We were so looking forward to him being part of our annual summer jam session. When he could make it in the past he was such a fun addition ! Ihope he has a killer drum set in the afterlife!
