It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paul Gustin (November 14, 1934 - July 18, 2025). He was a beloved man, whose presence touched the lives of family, friends, and community alike. Though his journey on this earth has come to an end, the legacy of his care and concern for his family and friends, his persistent pursuit of excellence, and his unwavering strength will live on and continue to inspire all who knew him.
Born in Steelton, Pennsylvania to Frank Gustin and Veronica (Newkam) Gustin, he shared his childhood with his older brother Frank (deceased), younger brother Art (deceased) and younger (surviving) sister Patsy Klunder of Gilbert, AZ. He was a lifelong member of the Roman Catholic Church and attended grade school at St. John's in Steelton, PA where he also served as an altar boy. His sense of adventure and pursuit of excellence led him to become an Eagle scout at a young age. Paul went to Harrisburg Catholic High School where he excelled in football and met the love of his life and wife of 70 years, Rosemary Weaver Gustin. Paul and Rosemary married shortly after high school. Early in their married life, Paul worked at Bethlehem Steel in Steelton, PA to support his wife and first-born son. However, he soon made a life changing decision to leave his job and pursue a college education and football career at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. After four long and challenging years in college, Paul graduated from Rutgers in 1960 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree and as a multi-year starting member of the Varsity Football Team.
Paul & Rosemary soon began resuming the rest of their family and moved to Baltimore, MD where they raised their four children. While in Baltimore, Paul worked first at Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, MD and then at Western Electric where he authored over 15 patents for their parent company, AT&T. He also founded a startup Plastic Injection Molding business called Metro Plastics. Paul was also very active in coaching youth football for the Dundalk YMCA and served as a Member and President of the Baltimore-Washington Chapter of the Society of Plastics Engineers. As they were nearing their retirement years, Rosemary and Paul moved to Peoria, AZ, where they enjoyed the sunny days for 38 years. They loved exploring the Southwest and particularly enjoyed spending time in their second home in Prescott Valley AZ. Sadly, Rosemary passed away on January 10, 2023. Shortly after Rosemary's passing, Paul moved to Greenville, SC to spend the rest of his days with his family there.
Paul is survived by his son Paul R. Gustin Jr., daughter-in-law, Julie Gustin; daughter, Ellen Arabea, son-in-law George Arabea; daughter Susan Keithley, son-in-law Tom Keithley; son Mark Gustin, daughter-in-law Beth Gustin. Also surviving are ten Grandchildren and four Great Grandchildren who will always keep their Pops near and dear to their hearts.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, 10:00am-10:45am at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home-Southeast, with a Catholic Prayer Service to follow at 11:00am.
