Otto Schumacher Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, in
Greenville, South Carolina, at the age of 76. Born on June 26, 1949, in
Denver, Colorado, Otto lived a life filled with joy, passion, and a deep commitment to family and community.
Otto, affectionately known as "Hal" to his family and friends, enjoyed a long and rewarding career as a computer programmer. Throughout his professional journey, he made significant contributions in the manufacturing industry, working with notable companies such as JP Stevens, Michelin, Ahold, and Hewlett Packard. His expertise in mainframe programming earned him the respect of peers and industry leaders alike.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Otto exemplified dedication and service, values that he carried into every aspect of his life. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his community, particularly through his involvement in church league softball, where he not only played but also dedicated time to coaching his children's teams. His love for sports, especially for the Clemson Tigers, was a defining trait, bringing him deep joy and countless memorable moments.
Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Otto Henry and Rose Craig Schumacher, as well as his beloved wife, Joanne Schumacher.
He is survived by his loving children, Karl Schumacher (Patricia), Liesel Lunn (Dan), Amanda Schumacher (Rossy Jimenez), and Jason Schumacher (Meghan), as well as his siblings James Schumacher(Mary), John Schumacher (David Gerald), and Charles Schumacher (Ilia), as well as his brother-in-law, James Bennett (Mary Ann), sister in law, Sally Marie Guerry. He also leaves behind a cherished legacy of grandchildren-Karina, Patrick, and Natalia Schumacher, Hannah Oliver (Ben), Hailey and Zachariah Lunn, Melanie, and Madelyn Schumacher-and great-grandchildren Daphne and Wesley Oliver, who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
A celebration of Hal's life will take place on February 21, 2026. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Southeast, beginning at 11:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at noon. Otto will then be laid to rest in Pickens, in a peaceful setting surrounded by the beauty of nature.
In remembrance of Hal's spirit and the love he shared, may we all carry forward his legacy of kindness, dedication, and joy for life. He will be sorely missed but will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
