Nellie Odom Huffling, age 98, of Reidville, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026.
Born on June 7, 1927, in
Greenville, South Carolina, Nellie was the beloved daughter of Dalton E. Odom and Bessie Mae Roberson Odom and the cherished granddaughter of Owen Franklin Roberson and Louvicy Thornton Roberson. A lifelong resident of Greenville, Nellie built her life around faith, family, and steadfast devotion to those she loved.
On November 4, 1947, she married the love of her life, Samuel B. Huffling, Sr., in Greenville. Their marriage was one of enduring commitment and partnership until his passing on May 11, 1997. In a sweet twist of fate, her childhood friend, Francis Huffling, later became her sister-in-law, weaving friendship even more deeply into the fabric of her family life.
Nellie worked for J. P. Stevens Textiles, where she was known for her strong work ethic and quiet determination. But her greatest work and deepest joy was her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, a faithful mother, and a steady presence whose strength carried generations.
She is survived by her children, Sandra H. Miller (Ronald), Joan H. Earle (Billy), Susan H. Eichelberger (Ed), Sam B. Huffling, Jr. (Pam), Theresa H. Powell, and Robert B. Huffling (Connie). She was preceded in death by her daughters, Peggy H. Rogers and Linda I. Huffling.
Nellie is also survived by her siblings, Ruth Carlton and Elbert Odom, and was preceded in death by eight siblings. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of 27 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her strength, faith, and love. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Eric A. Rogers.
To know Nellie was to know unwavering love. She was faithful in her beliefs, strong in spirit, and fierce in her protection of those she held dear. Her life was a testament to devotion - to her husband, her children, and the generations that followed. Her family was her pride, her purpose, and her greatest joy. Though she will be deeply missed, her love endures in the lives she shaped and the family she cherished.
A visitation will be held Sunday, March 1, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.
