N. Evans Obituary
Noel David Evans, a devoted educator, loving father, and esteemed member of the Greenville, South Carolina community, passed away on September 7, 2025, at the age of 88. The eldest of six children, David was born on May 9, 1937, and spent his youth in Casper, Wyoming.
Noel enlisted in the National Guard while attending Casper College, where he pursued a degree in history. He later served two years of active duty in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Eisenhower (formerly Camp Gordon) in Augusta, Georgia, and later at (the former) Fort Ord in Monterey, California. Following his military service, he relocated to South Carolina, where he attended Furman University. It was there that he met his future wife, Jean Elizabeth Greenway, with whom he shared a remarkable 57 years and 8 months of love and laughter after marrying in 1963.
David is survived by four children, Drew Evans (Rebekah), Russell Evans (Mara), Robin Zarate (Elias) and Meg Burton; fifteen grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, two sisters and a brother. He was predeceased by his wife Jean on July 23, 2020, and two brothers.
David began his teaching career in 1963 at Parker High School, later contributing his expertise to the Clemson University Sumter County Cooperative Extension. He returned to the Greenville County School District, where he diligently worked while earning his master's degree and teaching certificate. David retired in 1995 after a fulfilling career dedicated to education.
A passionate reader, he had a deep appreciation for American history, focusing on the Revolutionary War through the First World War. His home was a testament to his love of literature, filled with shelves and stacks of books. Even as age and macular degeneration made reading increasingly difficult in his later years, David always kept a favored volume nearby.
David believed in democracy and passionately advocated for voting rights in Greenville County volunteering as a poll worker for three decades. He was a kind and humble man who preferred the company of the written word and his thoughts over grandiosity.
David was an avid photographer for most of his life, a proud member of Mensa, and past member of the Board of Piedmont Health. David and Jean were members of First Baptist Greenville, where he served as a Deacon and audio technologist.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown, on Friday, September 12, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
