Michael Bucci Obituary

It is with profound sadness and deep appreciation for a life richly lived that we announce the passing of Dr. Michael "Mike" Naldo Bucci, beloved husband, devoted father, esteemed surgeon, and cherished friend, who left this world in the arms of his wife on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at McCall's Hospice House.

Born on May 8, 1956, in Detroit Michigan, to the late Naldo and Fernanda Bucci, Mike's life was a testament to dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Mike was a proud graduate of University of Michigan, after which he proceeded his distinguished journey to the world of medicine at Wayne State University of Medicine.

Upon graduating from Wayne State in 1983, Mike followed his dream of becoming a Neurosurgeon and completed his fellowship at the University of Michigan where he was chief resident. Dr. Bucci moved to S.C in 1989 to initiate the neurosurgical ICU at what is now known as AnMed Health. Dr. Bucci was called upon by Saint Francis of Greenville in 1997, where he initiated the neurosurgery program there and still worked in collaboration with AnMed Health. Dr. Bucci would leave an indelible mark on his patients in both communities. Dr. Bucci was also a clinical assistant professor at MUSC and Edward VIA College of Osteopathic medicine. He shared his wealth of knowledge through 36 published articles in medical literature, becoming a respected member of the American Board of Neurosurgery. Dr. Bucci was an excellent surgeon whose contributions, dedication and compassion to patients, and beautiful heart made him the extraordinary individual that will never be forgotten.

Mike is remembered also for his polished and warm demeanor that mirrored his impressive professional achievements. It was not unusual to see him blowing leaves in his crisp white shirt and tie. He was always seen in a two button suit or sport coat at work, exemplifying his dedication, care, and compassion by further reassuring his patients and their families that they were in the best of care.

Mike was a vibrant spirit who lived life to the fullest from the time he opened his eyes till they closed. He was All American for lacrosse at Detroit Country Day High School. When he was a junior, he won the Harvard Prize Book and was class president his senior year. He was inducted into the University of Michigan hall of fame for his unmatched "most goals saved", to which he still holds the record. He took this passion to help coach lacrosse at Eastside High School. He also served as varsity hockey goalie for Univ. of Michigan (Go Blue!).

Mike was a proud first generation Italian American and enjoyed visiting his parents' village in Italy with his wife, family, and friends. Along with traveling the world, Mike enjoyed cooking or going out to eat with his wife, family, and friends. Mike and his wife also enjoyed their "afternoon coffee talks" and "late night wine talks". As long as Mike was with the people he loved, he was happy no matter the place or time.

Mike wore many hats other than being a wonderful doctor. He started his medical journey as a patient attendant in the OR in Detroit. He was a ballroom dance teacher and bartended in college. He also worked construction during his summer breaks. In his later adult life, Mike was know to relax with a fine Arturo Fuente Opus X cigar and a glass of wine or Jameson on the rocks. He would also take great pleasure playing poker once a month in "the man cave".

His legacy of love and caring will continue on with his wife, Marjorie; his children, Anthony Bucci and Addy Brady Bucci; sister, Donna Moretto and husband, Angelo; niece, Olivia VonPlonski and husband, Jacob; nephew, Dr. Matthew Moretto and wife, April; aunt, Adele Bucci; cousins, Lizabeth Casale and Dino Bucci; aunt, Diane Bucci, and cousins, Mark Bucci and wife, Stacey, Nori Bucci; and best friend of 62 years, Jeff Alexander and wife, Helen.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by uncles, Dino Bucci, Sr., Gilbert Bucci, and Alimondo Bucci.

As we mourn the loss of Dr. Michael Naldo Bucci, we also celebrate the impact he made on so many lives and the joy he brought into this world. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. A service to celebrate Mike's remarkable life will be on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. in the Downtown chapel. Entombment will be held on Friday, February 21st, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Rotunda in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, in Southfield, MI.

I just recently found out that Dr Bucci had passed. When I was 34 years old, (I am now 69), I found out that I had a brain tumor the size of a fist, (found by a Neurologist), who I had started seeing. I of course was shocked, (earlier symptoms had been misdiagnosed by other doctors), and went to tell my wife. Within four hours of learning this our phone rang, my wife answered, and it was Dr Bucci introducing himself, (he was 34 at the time too). He said that he was rescheduling his appointments the next day, and that I needed to be there in the morning for surgery. I can't explain it, but I felt comfortable with him and had the surgery; basically he saved my life. He took out 2/3's of the tumor, (he had to stop because surgery was going to long), and said I would be back on 1 to 3 years. I started having issues in approximately 2 years, went back, and he removed the rest of the tumor. Both time that I was in the hospital the staff had nothing but good things to say about Dr Bucci. Through the years I have thought about him many times, and to tell you the truth he is my true hero.

Dr. Bucci was an outstanding physician. During my service as a SC Workers' Compensation Commissioner, Dr. Bucci provided numerous 'Independent Medical Exams' which helped facilitate settlement of claims.

I am a Parkinson´s patient newly diagnosed, and I was aware that Dr. Bucci had this condition as well. I had thought about reaching out to him, but was not certain how to approach exactly. I´ve talked to him on the phone multiple times through the years about various neurosurgical patients. This message is to say that he was a great man and I have a special connection in that I have Parkinson´s as well and I take care of patience with this condition as well as have been practicing family practice for the same period of time he came into Greenville.

My deep condolences to his wife and family. My Wife and I would love to meet his wife if that is a possibility at some point. 864-449-4356 is my cell phone. And my email is included

I am a local family position at Piedmont family practice Since 1990.

I will always have fond memories of Dr. Bucci. As an Emergency Physician I had many opportunities to consult with Dr. Bucci. He was always incredibly kind and upbeat, even when accepting a horrendous case at 3 in the morning. Whenever I asked who was on call for neurosurgery and the answer was Dr. Bucci, my response was always "Thank God". Condolences to his family, but also to his medical family who will miss him greatly.

I knew Dr. Michael (Mike) Bucci for 49 years, going back to when we were lacrosse teammates at the University of Michigan. He was a great competitor and a lot of fun to pay with. He was a fearless lacrosse goalkeeper and a very good athlete. He was also one of the smartest guys I ever knew. We stayed in touch over the years. I visited him several times (in hindsight, not enough times) when he moved to South Carolina. I also saw him in Atlanta when he would attend a medical conference. Michael was a good, kind, decent, honorable man who was a blessing to everyone around him. He will be terribly missed by me and many others. That alone is a strong measure of the man and the life he lived. We offer sincere condolences to his family and friends. RIP old friend.
