Mary Bunnell Obituary
Mary Elizabeth Bunnell was born on February 21, 1948, in Princess Anne County, Virginia, now known as Virginia Beach, to the late Pearl Catherine Spence (Ivery) and Thaddeus Lewis. She was later adopted by John Ivery, Jr.
Mary grew up in the Blackwater area of Virginia Beach and graduated from Union Kempsville High School in 1966. She continued her education at Norfolk State University. On July 17, 1968, she married Joseph C. Bunnell, Jr., and together they were blessed with one daughter, Kim.
Mary and Joseph grew up just miles apart. At one point, they even attended the same church, where a divine interaction sparked a lifelong bond. After leaving the Tidewater area, they settled in Maryland, where Mary began her career as a bookkeeper with a major banking institution. Life's journey then took them to California, where she continued working in accounts receivable for another reputable bank.
This marked the beginning of a new rhythm, moving between the East and West coasts every two to three years until 1980. They drove cross-country at least three to four times, often completing the journey in just three days. This trek slowed in the '80s but picked up again through 1998, each trip becoming a chapter in their shared adventure. Whether winding through desert landscapes or cruising past mountain ranges, Mary embraced the journey with her signature grace and curiosity. She loved watching the scenery change, discovering new places, and meeting people along the way.
Mary had a radiant presence. She could light up a room with her smile and warmth. She had a rare gift for connecting with people; total strangers would meet her and, within minutes, be calling her "Mom" or trying to make plans to spend more time with her. Her kindness and charisma were magnetic.
She found joy in the simple pleasures of life: walking, sightseeing, beach outings, watching planes take off and land, and trips to Big Bear Lake, Las Vegas, Dover Downs, Virginia Beach and live concerts. She had a gift for transforming every house into a home, with her love for decorating and her passion for maintaining beautifully landscaped yards filled with vibrant flowers and lush green grass year-round.
Mary also adored the family's beloved dogs, especially the cocker spaniels and Pomeranians who brought her endless joy and companionship. Her love for animals was just another reflection of her gentle and nurturing spirit.
She had a fondness for fast, impeccably maintained cars-from her first yellow Super Beetle Volkswagen to her final yellow Corvette.
In September 2011, Mary was re-baptized at Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. She attended services regularly until her health began to decline in February 2022. Even then, she faithfully watched online services every Sunday until her passing.
Mary leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Joseph; her daughter, Kim; her sister, Ann Reid (preceded in death by husband David); her brother, Thaddeus Lewis; her sister, Delma Baldwin (Carlton); her brother-in-law, Melvin Bunnell (Rosa); two sisters-in-law, Mary Jordan and Rev. Dr. Lucille Turner; and a host of adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
