Madeline Pettersen Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Madeline Ann Pettersen, who left this world on April 28, 2025, at the age of 83. Born in Tarrytown, NY, on October 2, 1941, to the late Frank and Cecilia Keys, Madeline's life was marked by resilience and an indomitable spirit. As the last surviving member of five siblings, she grew up as a foster child, an experience that shaped her compassionate nature and deep commitment to family. Madeline married at the tender age of 18, embarking on a journey that would see her embody the role of devoted caregiver to her loved ones. She cherished her children, Louis Pettersen and his wife, Geri, Darlene Varriale, and Debra Pettersen, and was always there with unwavering support. Her love extended to her son-in-law, Michael Varriale, who she welcomed into her family with open arms. She is also survived by her five beloved grandchildren, Jonathan Varriale, Benjamin Varriale, Kathryn Pettersen, Julia Varriale, and Stephanie Pettersen. Madeline's foster parents, the late Santa and Nick Vaccaro, also provided a source of strength in her life. In addition to her beloved foster parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Alfred Pettersen. A true New Yorker at heart, Madeline was known for her spunk and vivacity. She had an innate appreciation for the beauty of the world around her, often found outdoors, admiring flowers and hummingbirds. Her love for her cherished dog, Peanut, was a testament to her nurturing spirit. Madeline's career as an assistant manager in the retail industry showcased her strong work ethic and her ability to connect with people. She left a lasting impression on all who crossed her path, bringing warmth and kindness wherever she went. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, May 12, 2025 at at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Greenville Humane Society in Greenville, South Carolina. In this time of reflection, we remember Madeline Ann Pettersen not just for her passing but for the extraordinary life she lived and the love she imparted to those fortunate enough to have known her.
