Kathryn Jones Obituary

Kathryn Grace Kitching Jones, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on February 20, 2026, at the age of 84. Known as Kay from a young age, she was born March 6, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of the late Donald Kitching and Virginia Ryerson Kitching.

Kay graduated from John Marshall High School in Los Angeles, California, in 1957 and shortly after, at the age of 16, traveled from Los Angeles to Greenville, SC, to attend Bob Jones University. While there, she met DeWitt Jones at Overbrook Gospel Chapel. She graduated in 1962 with a degree in Science Education. After teaching at Coulter Christian Academy in Los Angeles for a year, she and DeWitt married on August 9, 1963, and moved to Greenville. She continued teaching high school for seven years, both in the Greenville County Schools and at Bob Jones Academy. After her three children started school, she began working as a secretary at Champion International Corporation. She taught herself computer skills, worked her way up in the company, and went back to school to get further training as a Purchasing Agent, the position she held until she retired in 1998.

Her great joy was faithfully serving the believers at Overbrook Gospel Chapel for 65 years, where she taught Sunday School for various ages, ran children's clubs, played the piano, sang, organized events, counseled, and took on numerous other ministry roles. For several years, the family traveled and ministered to other assemblies where she frequently played the piano and sang.

She and DeWitt also had many college students in their home over the years for meals as well as for holidays and special events. She was known for her hospitality, her musical talent, and her encouraging notes and cards that she faithfully wrote over the years. She had an avid love of reading and grammar and thoroughly enjoyed editing articles for Cornerstone Magazine. Although she suffered many physical limitations for much of her life, she was still defined by her joyful spirit and engaging smile which caught the attention of those around her.

She is survived by her husband, DeWitt Jones; children, Kathryn Jones, Kristen Golson (Phil), and Kevin Jones (Karin); as well as grandchildren, Reyna, Bryn, Erin, Viggo, and S. She is also survived by her brother, David Kitching of Mt. Baldy, California and her sister, Elizabeth Robles (Jesus) of Los Angeles, California.

Visitation will be held Thursday, February 26, 2026 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel.
