Joseph Acker Wilkes, known affectionately as "Joe" to nearly everyone who knew him, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of family, and friendship. He was born on September 30, 1930, in Winnsboro, South Carolina, to Lucille Acker and Martin Yongue Wilkes.
Joe grew up in Winnsboro alongside his siblings, where he developed the values of hard work, loyalty, and kindness that would shape the rest of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Martin Sr.; and his sister, Julia Hungerpiller. He is survived by his brother, Carl Wilkes.
After graduating, Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Following his military service, he pursued a career in accounting. Eventually, he found his calling in public service, working for the State of South Carolina as head of finance for the Bureau of Laboratories in Columbia until his retirement.
In 1957, Joe married the love of his life, Theresa Ann Fincher. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their marriage of 49 years was an inspiring example of faithfulness and partnership. They shared many adventures, travels, and milestones until Theresa's passing in 2006. Joe's love for her endured every day of his life thereafter.
Joe spent the next 15 years enjoying his days with great friends as well as extended family as they lived life to the fullest!
Joe was blessed with a family that was the center of his world. He was the proud grandfather of six, Chad Richter (Holly), Nicole Croft-Gross (Nick), Michael Croft (Jordan), Anna Mason (Joe), Jacob Wilkes, and Sarah Wilkes. His joy multiplied with the arrival of six great-grandchildren, Gabriel Anderson, Chloe Richter, Bradley Mason, Miller Croft, Harper Croft, and Wilkes Mason. To them, he was simply "Papa Joe", a title he treasured more than any other. He loved nothing more than gathering with his family, sharing stories, cheering them on in their pursuits, and being their biggest source of encouragement.
For over 50 years, he was a dedicated member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC, where he served faithfully in numerous roles. His commitment to his church community was steadfast, and his quiet acts of service touched countless lives. Whether assisting, or simply lending a helping hand, Joe lived out his faith with humility and love.
Joe also had a wide array of hobbies and interests that reflected his curious mind and joyful spirit. He loved reading and studying genealogy, uncovering the stories of those who came before him. He enjoyed traveling and exploring new places, playing golf, and riding his bicycle well into his later years. He had a knack for building and flying model airplanes, as well as woodworking projects that showcased his creativity and patience. On Saturdays in the fall, he could be found cheering on his beloved South Carolina Gamecocks. Above all, his favorite pastime was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who brought light and laughter into every season of his life.
Joe will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, caring brother, faithful friend, and doting Papa Joe. He had a generous heart and a warm smile, and he gave of himself freely to others. His legacy of love, integrity, and faith will live on in all who had the blessing of knowing him. A life so well lived is never truly gone. Joe's presence will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.
His celebration of life will be on held Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church. A finger food reception to greet the family will follow the service at the church.
