Janet Lane Obituary
Janet Miller Lane, 92, passed away peacefully in the morning of August 19th, 2025, with her sweetheart of 76 years by her side. She was born on June 22, 1933, to the late Alton Bert Miller and Bernice Benthall Miller in the small town of Rich Square, NC. She and her sisters lived at Camp Lejeune for several years as small children, where Janet rode horses and enjoyed the companionship of her German Shepherd, Buff before moving back to Rich Square, where she lived until she went to Meredith College.
Janet was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed being a homemaker, being around animals, drawing and painting, reading, and traveling to new places with her closest friends. Nothing, however, was more important to her than spending time with her family.
Janet is survived by so many who loved her. She first met her future husband, James Garland Lane, Jr., when they were in the fourth grade, where an already smitten Jim would sit behind her in class and pull her pig tails to get her attention. As 16-year-old high-school students, they began to date until they were later married on October 8, 1954. After 16 months in Hawaii during Jim's Marine Corps service, they returned to North Carolina and eventually relocated to Greenville, SC where they went on to enjoy over 70 incredible years together as husband and wife.
Also surviving Janet are four children and nine grandchildren, Bernice Christine Lane and her children Michael Schmitt and Jimmy Schmitt; Frances "Binky" Chapman (Mark) and their children Robert Chapman and Lane Chapman; James Garland Lane III (Ellen) and their children Jake Lane (Emily), Patrick Lane and Allie Lane; and Amy Lane Thomas (Will) and their children William Thomas, Jr. and Emily Thomas. Janet is also survived by two sisters, Frances Thomas and Martha Chaney (Joel.) Many other extended family members and friends will miss her dearly.
Although a celebration of life will be privately held, friends and family may leave remembrances on the funeral home website: fletcherfuneralservice.com
Janet's final days were spent at home with her husband, children, grandchildren, and her dog, Millie. We are all so grateful for the love and influence that Janet has had on so many lives. Thank you for all thoughts and prayers as we remember those family members who will miss her most.
