Jane Thomas Obituary

Cynthia Jane Wolfe Thomas, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025 leaving behind a remarkable legacy of kindness and generosity. Born on February 4, 1947, in Rock Hill, SC, Jane was the youngest of seven children to Margaret Sturgis Wolfe and Fred Wolfe. She lived a life marked by grace and purpose, always extending herself to others. Her infectious warmth and unwavering optimism brightened the lives of all who knew her. Jane's loving marriage to her high school sweetheart, William Davis (Bill) Thomas, was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Their bond was strengthened over 57 years of marriage in lives that were truly shared. Their home was a sanctuary, always filled with love, laughter, and the aroma of something delicious cooking. Her bond with her grandson is unbreakable, and he was fortunate to grow up with her as a presence in his daily life. Her family learned from Jane's example as well as her direct instruction on how things should be done and how other people should be treated: with care, respect, and attention to detail. One of Jane's many strengths was showing love through acts of kindness. Professionally, Jane dedicated her keen intelligence and many talents to enriching the lives of others through education. She graduated with English degrees from Winthrop University (BA) and Florida State University (MA). For many years, she ignited a love for literature and a respect for clear, correct grammar as a high school teacher. In later years, her commitment to education extended far beyond the classroom. At the Greenville News, she directed the highly successful "Newspaper in Education" program in classrooms across the upstate of SC. In this role, she connected with the Greenville Literacy Association, which she would serve with distinction as the Executive Director for fifteen years before retiring in 2013. In this critical nonprofit leadership role, Jane worked tirelessly to empower countless individuals through literacy, leaving an indelible mark on the educational landscape of Greenville. Jane's impact on the lives of those around her will be felt for generations to come. She will be deeply missed, but Jane's spirit will live on in the memories we share, in the lessons she taught us, and in the love she so freely gave. Jane is survived by her devoted husband, Bill Thomas; her daughters, Jennifer Thomas Baggett (Jeffrey) and Andrea Thomas (Laura Williams); her grandson, Will Baggett; her brother, Bill Wolfe (Pat); her sister, Nancy Wolfe Rivers; and numerous cherished in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Jane was predeceased by four beloved siblings, Betty Wolfe Boyd, Margaret Wolfe Edens, Freida Wolfe Sutton, and Fred Wolfe. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7, at 3:00 p.m. in Daniel Chapel on the campus of Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway Greenville, 29613. A reception will follow immediately afterwards in the Garden Room of the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Greenville Literacy Association, My Neighbor's Voice, or to any charitable organization. I had the privilege and honor to work with Jane professionally through my position as Director of the Quick Jobs with a Future for Greenville Technical College. Our paths would cross through Job training, Educational, Community projects, and United Way initiatives. She was very smart and committed to any endeavor to help individuals or improve the entire Greenville community. Her legacy lives on .

Deep heartfelt condolences to the entire family. May precious memories cushion the pain of this difficult time, as well as, provide comfort in the future. God bless each one of you.

During my time at Furman, Jane was my Mom away from home...so many fun nights at Jane and Bill´s house and wonderful meals together. She was the epitome of love, grace, and generosity. My heart is with Jennifer, Anj, Bill, and Will and the whole family.

Bill and family,
As a Greenville News colleague and then non-profit sector colleague, I watched and admired Jane over many years. She truly was a gift to our community. I'm sorry that you -- and we -- have lost her.

BT, Jennifer and Andrea,
My heart is so saddened by news of Janes passing. I remember her fondly from my days at Mars Hill. I especially remember her welcoming and loving spirit when choir students would visit your home on "Thomas mountain". She was so proud of her family! You will miss her daily presence in your lives but she lives on in many many hearts.
Peace, love and blessings be with you now always, but especially now.
