James Smith Obituary

James Leonard Smith, 78, passed away August 9, 2025. A native of Greenville County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Oliver James "Bud" and Rachel Sadie Johnson Smith. James was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran, having served in the 101st Airborne Division, where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He retired as plant supervisor for Steel Heddle after 27 years of service and attended Praise Cathedral. Surviving are his wife, Patricia "Pat" Ann Barton Smith of the home; a son, Chris Smith (Taj) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; a daughter, Laura Smith King (Ryan) of Greer; a brother, Roger Smith (Tiffany) of Inman; a sister, Ann Mitchem of Greer; and six grandchildren, Christin Smith, Drayton Stafford, Bailey Stafford, Skylar Martin, Aden Orr, and Ayan Orr. Funeral services will be held 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at The Wood Mortuary Chapel conducted by Dr. Keith Kelly and Mr. Brandon Brown. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillcrest Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held 2:00-3:45 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at The Wood Mortuary. The family is at their respective homes. James was a great family man who truly appreciated everyone in his family and this who married into the family. I very much appreciated the opportunity to meet and get to know him after my son, Ryan, married his daughter Laura. We will all miss him.

I worked for a little time for James at Steel Heddle and enjoyed playing golf with him and at myrtle beach, he was a great man and will be missed by friends and his family.
