George League Obituary

George Franklin "Frank" League, III, 86, devoted husband of Barbara Blakely League, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Born in Greenville, SC, he was the only child of the Eleanor Fraser and George Franklin League, Jr. Frank graduated from Clemson University and proudly served in the United States Air Force Reserves. Frank was dedicated to the family business which was established in 1917 and has continued with many generations of League family members. As the owner of G. F. League Company, Frank was a workaholic in the truest sense, channeling his energy into ensuring the success and smooth operation of the family business for over 70 years. He was a man of action, a creator and a recreator, always seeking ways to enhance the lives of those around him. His commitment to work was matched only by his love for the great outdoors, as he found joy in backpacking with his family when he was younger through the Pisgah Mountains and exploring the breathtaking beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Frank was deeply involved in his community, forming lifelong friendships that enriched his life. His service as a long-time member of the Rotary Club, Greenville Jaycees, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Sertoma Club, the Poinsett Club and the Round Towners GGA Club and various dance clubs exemplified his dedication to giving back. Frank was especially honored to have made many great lasting friendships with his membership in Leadership Greenville, Class XXII. After retirement, he shared his time between homes on Paris Mountain and at the North Carolina coast. His faith also played an essential role in his life; he was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville, SC and attended services at Our Lady of the Star by the Sea and Saint Brendan The Navigator Catholic Church while on the coast of North Carolina. His spirituality was a cornerstone of his life, anchoring his values and inspiring those around him. His memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of his loving wife of 64 years, Barbara; two adoring sons, George F. League, IV, (Angie) and Daniel Fraser League (Linda); and four precious grandchildren, Carson Nicole League, Dr. Alexis Fraser League (David Sloan), George "Quinn" F. League, V, and Stephen Michael League (Wil McClary); brother in law, Dan G. Blakely and many other loving family and friends. In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his son, William Claude "Bucky" League and brother in law, Claude W. Blakely. A private family burial will be held in Springwood Cemetery. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date at the Poinsett Club in Greenville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church Capital Campaign, 111 Hampton Ave, Greenville SC 29601; or Greenville Humane Society, 305 Airport Rd. Greenville SC 29607 or plant a tree in Franks's memory. Friends are encouraged to share their favorite memories of Frank with the family by clicking on the button labeled "Share A Memory".

We are keeping your family close in our prayers. We will always remember Frank for his gentle sense of humor, generosity, and his many years of service to the Altamont Club and the Paris Mountain community.

So sorry to hear about Frank's death. He was a great friend to the Roundtowners. I especially remember our entry in the Greenville Christmas Parade.
