Gene Mathis Obituary

Gene Woody Mathis, 64, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Born in Asheville, NC, he was a son of the late Frank Luther Mathis, Sr. and Marilyn Jeanette Williams Mathis. Gene loved God, family, friends, and racing. He was an avid fan of Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Gene could often be found having breakfast at Waffle House. He loved interacting with people there and was considered the mayor of Waffle House. Gene is survived by his wife, Anita Elaine Hall Mathis; a brother, David Lee Mathis (Sharon); two sisters, Sue Toney (Tommy) and Teresa Prosser (Keith); a brother-in-law, Donnie Hall; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Mathis, Jr. and Kenneth Lee Mathis; a sister, Lori Ellen Mathis; and a brother-in-law Estle "Jr" Hall. A visitation will be held at Victory Chapel Baptist Church on Monday, September 15, 2025, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. A celebration of life will follow beginning at 12:00 pm. Burial will follow the service at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
