Elizabeth Hughes Obituary

Elizabeth "Betsy" Hughes passed away September 30, 2024 in Greenville, South Carolina.

Born Betty Ann Land in Columbus, Mississippi in 1937, she later adopted a family nickname: Betsy. She was the daughter of the late Christine Murphy and Frederic Land, long residents of Greenville, SC. Betsy was raised in the city and spent most of her life there, graduating from Greenville Senior High School in 1956. She received her Liberal Arts degree and Master of Education in the area of Education for the Deaf, from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. In 1960 she married her first husband, James Carlisle Scott, Jr. of Gaffney, SC and spent 12 years as a stay-at-home-mom raising three beautiful children. In 1975 she began her teaching career of 27 years with Greenville County Schools, where she served as an itinerant teacher for students who had hearing problems. In 1983 she married her second husband, Warren Joseph Hughes, Jr. of Greenville, SC. Since retirement in 2000, she enjoyed tutoring at Greenville literacy Association and watching the ball games and Karate events of her grandsons. Her greatest joys in life were her children, her grandchildren, and her devoted husband, Warren.

Betsy is survived by her husband of 41 years, a daughter, four sons and six grandsons: Laura Griffin and grandson, Hunter Griffin of Greenville, SC; David Scott and wife, Sherri of Pawleys Island, SC, and grandsons, Spencer Scott and Alexander Scott of Atlanta, GA; Alan Scott and wife, Ellen, and grandsons Marshall Scott, Collier Scott, and William Scott of Gainesville GA; Warren Hughes III of Newport, VA; and William Hughes and wife Mary Kate of Greenville, SC. Also surviving: a sister, Nancy Baldwin and husband, James of Greenville, SC; a nephew, James Baldwin IV and wife Jean, and their son, James Baldwin, and daughter Kate Baldwin of Greenville, SC; a niece. Christine Perkins and her daughters, Mattie and Caroline Perkins of Greenville, SC.

Betsy was an active member of Fourth Presbyterian Church of Greenville, SC and served as on Elder, Moderator of the Worship Committee, Chairman of the Wedding Committee, and a member of the choir.

A committal service will be held in the Memorial Garden at Fourth Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev Mike Hoyt. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
