Douglas Frazier Obituary

Douglas Allen Frazier, 78, husband of Beverly Johns, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2025. As was his style, he was joking and teasing until the very end. That was the Doug we knew and loved. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was a life-long fan of the Baltimore Ravens, steamed crabs and all things Maryland. He also served in the Maryland National Guard. Doug attended Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and the University of Baltimore where he studied politics and history. He never missed the opportunity to demonstrate his skills while watching Jeopardy, frequently looking around the room proclaiming "I don't know how I know that." He was an active member of OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) at Furman University and a former Board Member of the Foothills Philharmonic Orchestra. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf and spending time with friends at the Berea Senior Center. After college, Doug began a career in retail sales, ultimately serving as Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Waring Co. He frequently traveled to factories throughout Europe, China and other countries to develop and seek out novel products to sell. He often entertained us with stories from his travels, such as traveling in Romania with livestock in the back of the plane. Or being warned about eating from the buffet in China with his guide saying "if he dies, he dies." Despite a successful career, he always described himself as a simple peddler. He was never arrogant or boastful. Although he had an appreciation for the finer things in life, he found joy in the simple things: a craft beer, a game of Quiddler with friends, and talking, talking, talking. He was nothing if not a very social being and a good friend. The true light of his life was his family, children, grandchildren and friends. He was courageous enough to marry a woman with three teenage children and he loved and raised them as his own. Speaking of courage, he taught Kelly to drive, taught Bryan how to shave and spent countless days driving through New England before dawn taking Matt to hockey practice and games. He was blessed with the love of three granddaughters, Riley McMahon, Tatum McMahon, and Sophia Golden; and one grandson, Tyson McMahon. He was known to his grandchildren as "Frazier". His family expanded recently when Kelly married Todd and we welcomed Todd's daughters, Hannah and Lila, into our lives. In addition to his wife of 25 years and his constant companion, Clancy, he is survived by two sons, Bryan and Matthew McMahon; daughter, Kelly McMahon and son- in- law, Todd Morgan; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his in-laws, Wayne and Patti Fort; sisters-in-law, Debi Johns, Cyndy Johns and Helen Frazier; nephews, Mitchell Abston, Ron (Phyllis) and Steven (Kaye) Frazier; and nieces, Shannon Custer, Mallory Wilson (Scott) and Wendy Heydon (Jeff) and good friends from coast to coast. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ugene Bates Frazier and his brother, Ronald Frazier. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Northwest with a reception to follow at OLLI at Furman.
