Donald Lee Mitchell was born on July 19, 1940, in Pickens County, South Carolina. A Greenville native, Donald spent the last 15 years living in Columbia with his daughter.
Donald dedicated his life to the engineering field, specializing in site management and electronics. His career took him across the United States and abroad, with his favorite assignment being a memorable year in Johannesburg, South Africa.
A faithful member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Moore, South Carolina, Donald gave generously of his time, especially working with the church youth as a baseball and softball coach. He was also a lifelong Mason, affiliated with Poplar Springs Lodge #415 AFM, and an active member of Reidville Chapter #46 of the Order of the Eastern Star, where he proudly served as Worthy Patron many times.
Donald lived a truly fulfilled life. He never met a stranger, always showing kindness to people and animals alike. His heart of gold, quick wit, and countless life stories brought joy and wisdom to his family and friends. He deeply loved those around him and was known for offering sound advice, drawn from his rich life experiences. A passionate collector of unique and beautiful things, Donald also had a lifelong love for hot rods, particularly 1940s Chevys and Fords. Attending car shows brought him great happiness, and he was a devoted fan of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt (#3).
He was predeceased by his parents, Glen Lee Mitchell and Lillian Brown Mitchell; his sister, Joan Patricia Mitchell; and his beloved son, Brian Keith Mitchell.
Donald is survived by his loving wife, Hellan Quinn Mitchell; his daughter, Donna Kelli Mitchell Tutsie; his grandson, Keith Mitchell Tutsie (wife Judyth Vyctoria Haynes Tutsie); his great-grandson, Nolan Quinn Tutsie; and his sister, Micki Ayn Mitchell of The Villages, Florida.
In accordance with his wishes, Donald was cremated. A private service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, where he will be laid to rest alongside his son. Due to health concerns within the family, there will be no formal visitation.
Donald's kindness, laughter, and love will be forever cherished by all who knew him.
