Denise Broadwater Obituary

Denise Broadwater
Duncan, SC
Denise Ann Mast Broadwater passed peacefully at the age of 62 years old at home on July 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Denise was born on June 21, 1963, in Dover, Delaware, daughter of Rebecca 'Betty' S. Laughter and Daniel Alva Mast.
She is survived by her loving husband, Gregory 'Greg' Lynn Broadwater, her children Benjamin Carl Broadwater (Caitlin), Ethan Daniel Broadwater (Samantha), and Megan Arlene Leaders (Brent), and her grandchildren Hudson Gage Broadwater, Emmett Gray Broadwater, Clarence Gregory Leaders, and Hampton Lee Henry Leaders. She is also survived by her siblings Rosey Dow, Daniel 'Junior' Mast, Darryl Mast, and Robin Gallman.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Rebecca Laughter, and her father, Daniel Mast.
Growing up in Delaware, Denise was part of the conservative Mennonite church. In her memoir, she recalls "singing acapella with women in cape dresses and coverings on one side and bearded men in dark, straight-cut coats on the other."
Her passion for helping others blossomed as she began her higher education at Pensacola Christian, where she completed both her Bachelors of Arts with a Speech Minor and Masters in Educational Administration. She continued her education at Columbia International University in 2008 with a second Masters in Clinical Counseling.
Denise met Greg in Pensacola, Florida, during her graduate studies. They married on May 23, 1987, in Pensacola, Florida. They raised their family beginning in Spartanburg, SC, and moved throughout the state remodeling and building homes of all shapes and sizes. They built close-knit communities in Columbia, Charleston, and Greenville. Denise was an elementary school teacher for several years before going back to college to become a counselor. She began her private counseling practice in 2008 in Mount Pleasant, SC, and spent many years loving people unconditionally and meeting them where they hurt. She continued counseling after moving to Duncan, SC, at iTrust Wellness until her retirement in 2023. Denise also served on the Board of Switch, an organization established to end trafficking and exploitation of women in Upstate South Carolina.
Denise was active in choir while in college and continued her love of singing with Greg when they joined their church choir in Charleston. She loved hosting family gatherings, gardening all types of vegetables and flowers, and any shade of blue. Denise showed her love for her children through quilting, making each couple a custom quilt upon marriage. She fulfilled her dream of owning a farm and followed in her mother's footsteps raising long-horn cattle and chickens at their home in Duncan, SC. She spent the last eight years of her life spoiling her four grandsons every chance she got. She shared many of her hobbies with them, baking, sewing, gardening, and farming together.
The viewing and funeral services will be held on July 9, 2025, at Abner Creek Baptist Church, 2461 Abner Creek Rd, Greer, SC 29651.
The viewing will take place from 11am-1pm, and the funeral service will begin at 3pm.
A private family gathering will be held for the graveside service at Boiling Springs Memorial Gardens in Boiling Springs, SC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Switch (switchsc.org).
The family asks that those in attendance of the services wear a shade of blue, Denise's favorite color.
