David Gay Obituary

David William Gay, a loving father, devoted husband, and a beacon of hope for those in need, returned to the Lord on November 24, 2024. His life was defined by two words: laughter and service.

Born on May 1, 1944, in London, England, to William Gay and Hettie Gay, nee Stock, David remained a proud Cockney throughout his life. As a boy, he was known for his charm, cheekiness, and remarkable grit. He put himself through night school at Borough Polytechnic, and in 1966 graduated as a chemical engineer, yet somehow still found time to embark on countless escapades around the UK with his mates. That same perseverance won the heart of Audrey Janet Shelley, who rebuffed his advances over and again until finally relenting. They married in 1968 and together they adopted two children, Jane and Peter, emigrated to the United States, and built a home filled with laughter, adventure, and chocolate.

David brought joy to everyone he met, with a quick wit and an endless supply of stories. His commitment to serving others was unwavering. Throughout his life, he tirelessly volunteered, and after retiring from a distinguished, decades-long career at Fluor Corporation, he pioneered a transformative ministry at Triune Mercy Center. There, David advocated for the incarcerated, the addicted, and the impoverished, offering them second chances and the opportunity to rebuild their lives. His ceaseless love and unwavering belief in Jesus' commandment to "love thy neighbor" impacted thousands, making him a shining example of Christ's teachings.

Until they meet again, David leaves behind his wife Audrey, daughter Jane, and her son Drew, as well as son Peter and his wife Emi.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on December 6 at Triune Mercy Center 222 Rutherford St, Greenville, SC 29609. In lieu of flowers, David would have appreciated donations to the churchwhether money, goods, or, better yet, your time. His family hopes his example will inspire others to embrace love and extend respect and care not only to those in their own circles but also to those society has overlooked.
