David Bishop Obituary

Greenville native, Captain David King Bishop, 88, died Sunday morning, April 6, 2025, after a brief illness. On June 5, 1959, David married Frances, who was the love of his life. Throughout his life, David remained close to his older brother, Billy, who often exhorted him with a smile and a wink to slow his driving speed telling him to take his foot off the gas and "hold it in the road". David served as an officer in the US Navy for more than 30 years, moving thirty-four times while working on destroyers, an aircraft carrier, and four submarines. Later in his career, he commanded the USS Simon Bolivar, a fleet ballistic missile submarine, and then the USS Frank Cable, a naval sea tender. His last tour of duty was at the Pentagon. In addition to being a man of duty, Captain Bishop was a man of faith, serving as a deacon in Charleston, SC and with the Greer Gideon Camp for many years. Most recently, he attended Taylors First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Kannia Frances Bishop; two children, Michael David Bishop and Gaye Bishop Clark; sister-in-law, Judy Carolyn Karsten; grandchildren, Kristy Bishop, Anna Elizabeth Wiggins, and Nathan Clark; four great-grandchildren, Clark Jaymes "CJ" Wiggins, Zayden Wiggins, and Elizabeth and Isaac Clark. He was preceded in death by his beloved siblings, Billy P. Bishop and Magret Lacquer. We wish fair winds and following seas to the Navy Captain as he heads on to meet his ultimate commander and chief, the Lord Jesus Christ. A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 12:00 noon until 1:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Southeast followed by the graveside service at 2:00 p.m. in the Taylors First Baptist Church Cemetery. Captain Bishop was my last skipper on the Simon B. we served together for several patrols. Captain Bishop was absolutely the best, both as a navy man and a human being. Kind, considerate and stern when needed. I believe flying model airplanes was one of his passions. I know we talked several hours about the hobby during the patrols. Rest in peace my friend.

I served on board the USS Simon Bolivar SSBN 641 from May 1968 until Jan 1970. I was born and educated in South Carolina, went to Greenville Tec and lived in Greenvill for several years.

He was my first CO on the USS Simon Bolivar SSBN 641 Gold, made 4 patrols with him. Good man and leader. I am so sorry . I was thinking of him today and looked on web to see if i could find him. Here he is. I pray for you all and we know we shall see each other again on day. Our hope in Jesus assures us of that promise. He is with Jesus now, praise God for all His mercy and Grace.
