Betty Hamby Obituary
Betty Wood Hamby, 94, went to her heavenly home on July 31, 2025, to meet her savior and join her loving husband, Charles Wilton Hamby, who preceded her in death. A native of Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Dee A. and Marie McElrath Wood. After retiring from the Greer Shirt Plant, Betty devoted the next 26 years to volunteering at Greer Community Ministries. A lifetime member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, she was also a faithful member of the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class. Her devotion to the Lord, her family, and her church shaped her life. Beyond those, Betty had a deep love for the Atlanta Braves and proudly claimed the title of their biggest fan. Travel brought her immense joy-whether on family beach trips or adventures with the Happy Hearts of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Together with Charles, she was an active member of the Honda Gold Wing Club, and the couple enjoyed countless motorcycle trips across the United States. Each spring, her home came alive with blooms as she carefully planted impatiens, geraniums, and tended to her hanging ferns. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Theresa Childs (Tim), Karen McAlister (Scott), and Kenneth Hamby, all of Greer; five grandchildren: Jeremy Hix (Dawn), Justin Hix, Emily Molina (Tony), Katie Adamson (Dylan), and Corey Hamby; four great-grandchildren: Cory Metcalf, Trey Hix, Hannah Hix, and River Scott Adamson; and one great-great-grandchild: Ace Bregg. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Elsie Westmorland, and one brother, James Kenneth Wood. Visitation will be held 1:30-2:45p.m. with a celebration of life service following at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by Rev. Scott McAlister and Rev. Jonathan Pearson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Tim Childs, Jeremy Hix, Corey Hamby, Trey Hix, Tony Molina, and Dylan Adamson. The Faithful Workers Sunday School Class and Happy Hearts group will serve as the Honorary Escort. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greer Community Ministries, P.O. Box 1373, Greer, SC 29651. The family would like to thank Natascha and her staff at Bayberry Retirement Inn (now Silver Treasures) for taking such good care of Mom this last year. You truly were an answer to prayer when we needed you. Online condolences may be made at www.thewoodmortuary.com
