Bessie Holmes Obituary

Mrs. Bessie Mae Holmes, lovingly known as "Nanny," was born on April 24, 1944, in Spartanburg, South Carolina to the late Anna Virginia Miller and Willis "Bill" Miller. From the very beginning, Nanny lived a life of selfless love. She stepped into responsibility early, leaving school in the 5th grade to help raise her siblings. Even with all that life asked of her, she never let go of her belief in growth-later earning her GED and a Bachelor's Degree in Theology from Carolina Theological Seminary. She always found a way to keep growing, and she made sure we did too.
Nanny was the soul of our family-the matriarch, the anchor, and the one who introduced us all to Jesus. She was the first to be saved, and it was her unwavering faith that shaped our foundation. Her prayers covered generations. Because of her, we know what it means to believe.
Married for 60 years to the love of her life, Frank Holmes, Nanny raised her children and grandchildren in a home where love, faith, and integrity were lived out daily. Her door and heart were always open. She raised not just her own, but so many others who needed a mother's love.
She was grace in motion-always dressed to perfection, lipstick just right, with a glow that turned heads and warmed hearts. Her smile lit up every room. Her spirit was joy, resilience, and style all wrapped into one.
Nanny spent many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant at White Oak Manor, and even after retirement, her nurturing spirit never slowed. If someone needed care, she showed up. If someone needed comfort, she gave it. Caring was not just what she did-it was who she was.
She was a lifelong and faithful member of Harrison Grove Baptist Church. always standing up for justice and lending her voice to what was right. Nanny was our songbird-her voice didn't just sing, it transformed. She sang with both the Harrison Grove Baptist Church Gospel Mass Choir, where she served as President, and the Do Re Mi Choir, known for its note singing tradition. When she lifted her voice in praise, the atmosphere would shift. Her voice carried healing, hope, and heaven. She sang with such conviction and beauty that you could feel God in the room. Whether it was a soft hum or a soaring solo, her voice reminded us that the Spirit was near. She also led the New Member Orientation Ministry and was deeply involved in the Sympathy Club and Flower Circle. She traveled across the eastern U.S., singing God's praises with joy and reverence. Her worship was powerful and real.
Nanny loved life. She found joy in simple moments-watching the birds dance in the feeder on the deck, tending her flowers, playing her favorite phone games, and tuning in to Judge Judy. She had a deep love for soap operas, westerns, and crime shows. She loved going to the movies, attending Spirit Fest, and sailing the seas on cruises. She was a proud fan of Patrick Mahomes and lit up every time the Chiefs played. And she adored the color purple-it was her crown.
She was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society, where she found joy, laughter, and sisterhood. In addition to her church service, she also served with great pride on the Westside Branch of the NAACP in Spartanburg, SC, and worked the polls during elections, always standing up for justice and lending her voice to what was right. And wherever Nanny was, her beloved cat Velvetine-"Velvet"-was not far behind, a quiet companion in her daily rhythm.
On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Nanny transitioned peacefully at Spartanburg Medical Center, surrounded by family. We gathered around her just as she gathered us throughout her life-in love, in prayer, and in the warmth of her spirit. Her passing was gentle, sacred, and full of grace. She left us just as she lived-with love all around.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Robert Lewis Holmes; her siblings Roy Lee Miller, Maggie Lucille Miller, and Vickie Diane Dawkins (preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dawkins). She is survived by her devoted husband, Frank Holmes of the home; her sons, Frank O'Neal Holmes (Angela) of Pauline, SC, and Marshall Holmes of the home; her siblings Katie Shippy, Carolyn Harris (Tom, deceased), Reverend Geneva Byrd, Anna Louise Jeter, and Daniel Miller (Teresa), all of Spartanburg, SC; her grandchildren, Ashton Holmes, Nnaemeka Hardy Holmes, Tyssie Foster (Terry), Alexandria Renee Jones, Kayla Holmes, and Ashia Holmes; great-grandchild, Jazlyn Foster; her cherished Velvet; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, church family, and treasured friends.
Mrs. Bessie Mae Holmes leaves behind more than a legacy-she leaves behind a love that will never fade, a faith that holds us together, and a light that continues to shine in all of us. We thank God for the gift of her life. Rest well, Nanny. You did it all, and you did it beautifully
