Woodrow Gatlin Obituary
Mr. Gatlin was born the son of Rev. Woodrow George Gatlin, Sr. and Marie Mills Gatlin on November 18, 1949 in Berkley County. He enlisted in the United States Army on October 9, 1969 and received an Honorable Discharge on April 26, 1978. He served two tours - the first in Vietnam and the second in Germany. Sergeant Gatlin was awarded numerous medals including the National Defense Service medal, the Vietnam Service medal, and the Army Commendation medal. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a retired employee of the Charleston Mill Service. His father was the Founding Pastor the Williamsburg Pentecostal Holiness Church where Woody spent his younger years. Though the military and life led him down many roads, he never moved his membership from the Bonneau Pentecostal Holiness Church. He remained of the Pentecostal Holiness faith and attended The Christian Fortress in these last years.
He leaves behind: his wife; two children, Travis (Celeste) Gatlin and Tess G. (Brad) McConnell; four grandchildren, Jordan, Gunnar, Jana, and Brody; a brother, Ronnie (Lisa) Gatlin; a sister, Gail (Leonard) Owens; his mother-in-law, Libby Wheeler; and a number of nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his extended family, Avis and Lewis Smith, Monty and Judy Wheeler, and Frankie and Sharon Wheeler.
He was predeceased by: his parents; a niece, Holly Roff; and his father-in-law, Waymond Lamont Wheeler.
A Home Going Celebration with Military Honors will be 4PM, Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at The Christian Fortress. Officiating will be Pastor Geraldine Bednego. Internment will follow in the Harmony Cemetery.
Visitation will be 6-8PM, Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.
