SUSAN TILLER, MOM, GRANDMOTHER, WIFE, FRIEND, ARTIST

Mary Susan Stroup Tiller, aged 74, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 23rd, surrounded by family. Susan was born in Lincolnton, NC November 14, 1947, to Chauncey D. Stroup Jr. and Marynette Link Stroup. She was graduated from Lincolnton High School, University of North Carolina-Greensboro with a degree in home economics education and the University of South Carolina with a master's degree in Adult Education. She enjoyed a career in the Georgetown County public school system: first as teacher of Home Economics, and later as Child Nutrition Director for Georgetown County School District for thirty years.

After retiring Susan followed her passion by becoming a professional painter, working primarily in oils. Painting was a lifelong interest and following retirement she chose to study painting under several different artists to develop her style. She painted many outdoor scenes of the Lowcountry, and still life renderings of floral arrangements including her favorites, hydrangeas and blue and white porcelain. A lifelong musician, Susan learned to play the violin at age 65 and joined the Saltwater Chamber Orchestra in Myrtle Beach. She played piano at home and would often play music with her two sons who learned guitar in their teenage years.

Susan loved her church, Prince George Winyah Parish Church in Georgetown where she was a communicant, served on the vestry for four years, and was a member of the choir and flower guild for 22 years. She was Chairman of Prince George's annual art sale for thirteen years and one year for plantation tours. She was Artist of the Year for the 2013 Georgetown Wooden Boat Show where her painting broke the auction record for the SC Maritime Museum. She was a proud member of Daughters of the American Revolution.

Susan chose to fill her free time pursuing her interests including travel, music, art, food and spending time with friends and family. Every week she drove to Charleston to spend time with her grandchildren.

Susan is survived by her husband Harry C. "Hank" Tiller Jr. and her son Robert K. Williams Jr. and his spouse Amy A. Williams, their two children Anna and Betsy, and her son Matthew W. Williams, and his two children, Lovett and Madeline. She is also survived by her brother C.D. "Chip" Stroup III and nieces Jennifer and Kristen, and nephews Jess and Braden.

Visitation will be held from 5pm to 7pm at Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home in Georgetown, SC on Wednesday, May 25th. A memorial service will be held at Prince George Winyah Parish Church in Georgetown, on Thursday, May 26th at 10:00am. A private burial service will be held at Hollybrook Cemetery in Linconlton, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Susan's name at Water Missions International and Samaritan's Purse.
