Mary Orvin Obituary

Mary Cantley Orvin died Friday, August 31, 2018 in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina a few weeks short of her 97th birthday. Mrs. Orvin, affectionately known to her family as Mamie, was the daughter of Jesse and Tressie Cantley and the wife of the late Edward "Ned" Earl Orvin Jr. who pre-deceased her in 1988. Her sister Betty Cantley Watson of Atlanta passed away in 2015. Mrs. Orvin is survived by her nieces and nephews, Tom and Mary Watson, Dave and Judy Watson all of Atlanta GA, Curt and Jenny Boren of Johns Creek GA, Charles and Jo Ann Haley and Mary Jane Snyder all of Mays Landing NJ, numerous great and great great nieces and nephews. Her family and friends will miss her greatly.

Mary was born October 1st, 1921 in Pinopolis, South Carolina before moving to the Georgetown area in the 1930's. She was a graduate of Winyah High School and the Rice School of Business. She was a lifelong employee of the International Paper Company where she met her future husband. She and Ned married in 1948 and moved to 612 Highmarket Street in 1950, where she resided until her recent move to the Lakes at Litchfield. She was a devoted member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown and was recently recognized as the second oldest member of the congregation-a distinction of which she was very proud.

Mary's greatest joys were her family, friends, church, Broadway Shows and delighting guests with her cooking. Her specialties were macaroni and cheese, perlow rice and peanut brittle and they were legendary among southern connoisseurs. Through the years, Mary spent a great deal of her time assisting friends by providing a meal, a ride to the doctor, or help with an errand. She will long be remembered for her countless acts of kindness and generosity to family, friends and strangers.

Services for Mrs. Orvin will be held Thursday, September 6th at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church on Highmarket Street in Georgetown. Visitation will be at 1 pm in the Fellowship Hall followed by a 2pm service in the church. The family will adjourn for a private burial at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
