M. Avant Obituary
Mr. Avant was born in Hemingway, a son of the late John Tunie and Eva Jane Tanner Pope Avant. He was an active Agri Businessman, farmer and was retired from Industrial Construction and graduated from Pleasant Hill High School Class of 1960.
He was a member of Center Baptist Church, an active Deacon, a former Music Leader, RA Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and Boy Scout Leader. He was a past President and still was an avid supporter and active member of the Carvers Bay All Sports Booster Club.
He was a member of the Georgetown County Sheriff's Advisory Council, a Commissioner of the Georgetown County Soil and Water Conservation District, and an active delegate of the Georgetown County Farm Bureau.
He coached both football and baseball for the Georgetown County Parks and Recreation Department for many years and was responsible for bringing rec football to the Pleasant Hill community.
He was a member of the Indiantown Masonic Lodge # 165, and the Omar Shrine Temple He was a founding member and former President of the Omar Jail Birds Unit in Hemingway.
He loved watching his children and grandchildren grow up and play sports. He loved doing anything outdoors from hunting and fishing to water skiing as long as it was outdoors in nature.
He was a member of the Wedgefield Country Club, an avid golfer and member of the Tri Counties Senior Golf Group.
Surviving are his wife, Janice Bruorton Avant; sons, Mark (Dawn) Avant, Harris (Kim) Avant and Marty (Lisa) Avant; grandchildren, Jacob, Jaxon, Jeremy, Jace, Jordan, Jennings and Jenna Kay Avant; brothers, Irby Thayer (Mary) Pope, Joseph W. (Ella Russell) Pope and Johnny J. (Elizabeth) Avant.
Mr. Avant was predeceased by three sisters, Alvilida Pope Russ, Olene Pope Avant and Myrtle Pope Goude.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Center Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, SC, will be in the church cemetery with full masonic rights.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Center Baptist Church, 2602 School House Dr., Hemingway, SC 29554.
