Joseph Powell Obituary

Joseph Daniel Powell, 83, of Georgetown, SC, died peacefully on June 21, 2019, at the McLeod Hospice House after a valiant battle with cancer.

He was born on March 24, 1936, in Hemingway, SC, a son of the late Dewey Melton Powell, Sr. and Elizabeth Maness Powell. He attended Hemingway High School and was a 1958 graduate of The Citadel. He was a veteran of the Army Reserves and retired from Georgetown Steel Mill in 1998.

Dan was known for his sense of humor and outgoing personality. He loved NASCAR racing and was a handyman who could fix nearly anything. He also loved traveling the highways of our beautiful country and visited all 48 of the continental United States. He added the final 9 states in the northwestern US when he was 81 years old.

He leaves behind his three daughters, Danette (Ricky) Foshee of Georgetown, SC, Yvette (Glenn) Gleason of Timmonsville, SC, and Suzette (Ron) Coker of Johnsonville, SC; six grandchildren, Ross Foshee, Mallory Foshee, Jake Gleason, Rhett Gleason, Dalton Coker, and Gracelyn Coker; one sister, Yvonne Sigley of Dalzell, SC; best friend George White of Georgetown, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to him as "Uncle Dan".

He was predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Elizabeth Harrell, Virginia Cagle, and Eleanor Clark; and a brother, Dewey Powell, Jr.

Memorial services will be held at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel. A private burial will be held at the Powell Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 PM until 4:00 PM on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel.
