Jerry Heinz Obituary

Jerry J. Heinz, husband of Janice Grange Heinz, of Beaufort, SC, died Saturday, August 9, 2025. Jerry was born on March 25, 1942 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Alfred Heinz and Elaine Anderson Heinz. Jerry grew up with brothers Jack and Joe. Jerry attended East High in Waterloo, IA and University of Northern Iowa where he played golf and was a frequent visitor of the pool halls. He began his career as an assistant golf pro at the South Bend Country Club in South Bend, IN and moved into the business world where he enjoyed a 30+ year career in outdoor advertising. Jerry's leadership style respected teamwork, loyalty and a strong work ethic, except on Wednesdays, which was Men's Day on the golf course, or Saturdays in the fall, when you'd find him cheering on the Irish in Notre Dame stadium. Jerry's passion for golf remained a constant throughout his life, especially at his favorite courses: South Bend Country Club, Pine Valley Country Club, the Daniel Island Club (charter member), Tatum Ranch and finishing his career at the Dataw Island Club in Beaufort playing and working as a ranger/starter. He shared his love of golf with his family and took pride in knowing his 8 hole-in-ones would be a great target for his grandchildren to chase. Surviving in addition to his wife, Janice; are three daughters, Terri Allgeier (Jim) of Pittsford, NY; Elizabeth Bumgarner (John) of Mt Pleasant, SC and Sara Bruns (Mike) of Beaufort; nine grandchildren: Margaret Allgeier Westrick (Drew), Sally Allgeier, Patrick Allgeier, Mary Bruns Harbin (Kyle), Lucy Bruns, Jerry Bruns, Wilson Bumgarner, Andrew Bumgarner and Samantha Bumgarner and two great grandchildren: JP and Rory Westrick. ...remember, Jerry, "East is East, West is West but we all know that West is best." Janice. There will be a private family mass in Beaufort.

Jerry was a kind and gentle man. He was always smiling and positive. He had great love for his family and "pushing" you along on the golf course in a very kind manner. I had many conversations with him over the years and I will greatly miss him. With deep sympathy to all his family.

Jerry handled what could easily have been a difficult job in "guiding " golf groups off on Dataw with great tact and was always a true gentleman. He will be missed and hard to replace.

Jerry was a very kind and humble man, who always started us off on the course with a smile and a quirky comment. He will be greatly missed here on Dataw Island.
