James Jayroe Obituary

James Porter "JP" Jayroe, 84, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, July 14, 2016, at Colleton County Medical Center. He was a resident of Veterans Victory House, Walterboro, SC since September 2013.

Mr. Jayroe was born one of eight children to Constance Finklea Jayroe and James Marvin Jayroe on July 3, 1932 in Georgetown County on the eastern part of Walker Road, "friendship section". He attended the old Oak Grove Elementary School and Andrews High School. He was a United States Army Veteran. He served in the Korean War and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He utilized his GI benefits to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Management and a Minor in Math from Clemson University in 1960. He was a former employee with Charleston Naval Shipyard and was a 18 year employee of International Paper Company where he was the Laboratory Manager in the Container Division. He chose a second career and became the Executive Directory of the Georgetown County Council on Aging where he served for over 20 years. He was a member of Sampit United Methodist Church and Herbert United Methodist Church. He was an avid Clemson "Tiger" fan and loved watching all football games. He loved all music especially old hymns and John Denver. He was known as a math whiz; his quick wit and enjoyment of talking politics with anyone. While at Veterans Victory House, he made the daily announcements and participated in all activities.

He leaves behind: a sister, Joyce J. (Donald) Gunter. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews whom he dearly loved. He is also survived by many cousins.

He was predeceased by: his parents; four sisters, Lila J. Bath, Thelma J. McGee, Mable J. Epps, and Claire J. Brown-Thomas; and two brothers, Russell A. Jayroe and Oneil M. Jayroe.

A Christian Service will be 1:00PM, Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Sampit United Methodist Church, 1077 Saints Delight Road, Georgetown, SC directed by the Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.

Viewing will be prior to the Christian Service at 12:30PM in the church sanctuary.

A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

The Jayroe family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to the Myrtle Beach Estates Assisted Living Facility and the Veterans Victory House Nursing Home for their compassion and excellent care that was shown during his stay with them.
