George Mills Obituary

George Ellis Mills passed away August 12, 2018 at Embrace Hospice House in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He was born in 1928 in Evansville, Indiana to Dr. George E. Mills and Permelia Ruth (Barrett) Mills, the family later moved to Atlanta Georgia.

George attended Druid Hills High School and graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Atlanta in 1945. He entered the U.S. Army in 1946 and served in the occupation of Japan after World War II. After returning home he completed his education at North Georgia College as a reservist. He graduated in 1951 with a BS in Business and received his officer's commission. He started his military service as a Paratrooper, Army Ranger and jump school instructor. George served in the following regiments: 1st Cavalry, 101st Airborne, 88th Airborne, 18th Airborne, 4th Infantry and 24th infantry Divisions. His service included the Korean War where he was awarded a Bronze star. During the Vietnam conflict George earned four Bronze Stars for his service. He later became an Intelligence Specialist and retired from the Pentagon in 1973 with a rank of Lt. Colonel.

George wed Mary Ruth Jones of Clay County Georgia in 1951 and they shared 61 adventurous years together. As a military family with three children, they lived in Germany, Japan, Hawaii and a number of military posts in the United States. In civilian life George enjoyed woodworking, sailing, house and car tinkering, and singing in the Church Choir.

He is predeceased by his parents George Ellis Mills, Sr and Permelia Ruth Barrett Mills, wife Mary Ruth Jones Mills and grandson Max Thomas Lamar Glazier.

He is survived by his three children, Joseph Lamar Mills and wife Carmel, George Edmond Mills and wife Joan and Laura Jean (Mills) Glazier and husband Mike. His memory lives on in his grandchildren; Marco Mills, Kimberly Mills, Mark Mills, John Gasper, Joyce Gasper, Taylor Glazier and Mary Glazier as well as his sister, Martha (Mills) Perry.

Burial services will be held at New Lowell Methodist Church in Clay County Ga at a later time.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to New Lowell Methodist Church, 225 Pataula Park Rd., Georgetown, GA 39854
