Evelyn Roane Obituary

It is with tremendous sorrow that we announce the passing of Evelyn Irene (Brock) Roane, age 93; loving wife, mother, grandmother, and devoted friend. Eve's earthly journey ended on September 17, 2025. Her kindness, love, generosity, and devotion to family and friends will live on in those that knew and loved her. Eve was born in Fayette, Alabama on June 17, 1932, to Horace Matison Brock and Elsie Pearl (Loftis). She was the 8th of 13 children and graduated from Fayette County High School in 1950. While there, she played French Horn in Band. After attending Business School, Evelyn joined the Navy where she served as a Yeoman at the Pentagon until 1955. After leaving Arlington, Virginia, Eve would go on to live in California, Cuba, North Carolina, and Maryland before first coming to live in Beaufort, South Carolina in 1967. It is here that she would meet the love of her life (confirmed bachelor) Lawrence H. Roane, Jr., and they would begin their crazy adventure. They meticulously planned their elopement on November 16, 1976, at the Elvis Chapel in Las Vegas, competing with the National Convention of the American Dental Association for a place to eat. Eve and Larry would dine at the Five Star McDonalds on Skid Row for breakfast. Always up for adventure (after all, Eve had fled Cuba during the political upheaval of the early 1960s), she would travel the wilds of Alaska, cruise the Caribbean with pirates, and bargain for rugs in Tijuana. Eve and Larry settled down in Simi Valley, California for the next 18 years. But living through the Northridge Earthquake of 1994 would convince them it was time to return to where it all began - beautiful Beaufort. And so it was that they reconnected with old friends, made new ones, and found new family at their beloved St. John's Lutheran Church. Eve enjoyed cooking and baking; embroidery, sewing, and quilting; puzzles, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy; volunteer projects at St. John's; watching hummingbirds and dolphins; watching football, especially her beloved Crimson Tide and any team that beat Auburn; and working with computers. Eve is survived by her husband of almost 49 years, Larry; her last surviving sibling Horace Brock of Fayette, Alabama; a daughter Susan (Yenerall) Spaulding and her husband Robert and three grandchildren: Erin, Matt, and Brianna of Wallkill, New York; a daughter Sharon (Yenerall) Lockwood and her husband Dan of Lenoir, North Carolina and one grandson Brandon and his wife Mary of Norfolk, Virginia; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. Eve was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, nine sisters, and one grandson. At 93, Eve was the longest-living Brock child. The family finds comfort in knowing Eve has gone home to her Lord and Savior and that she was looking forward to doing so. A funeral service will be held at on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at 11:30 am at St. John's Lutheran Church, 70 Lady's Island Drive, Beaufort, SC 29902. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 10:30am. Interment will follow at the Beaufort National Cemetery at 1:00 pm In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in memory of Eve to St. John's Lutheran Church.
