Edna Wright Obituary

Edna Mae Cummings Wright, 93, former educator of Georgetown, SC, died on Saturday, August 22, 2015 in Charlotte, NC. Memorial services will be held at 11am on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in the North Santee community.

Mrs. Wright was born on February 25, 1922 in Trenton, SC, a daughter of Alonzo Cummings and Mrs. Carrie Oliphant Cummings. She was educated in the public schools of Edgefield County, SC. After having attended Bettis Academy in Trenton, she continued her education and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary education from Allen University and a Master of Arts Degree in education from South Carolina State University. Edna was an outstanding teacher and educator who enriched the lives of her students while motivating them to be the best that they could be. She taught in the public schools of South Carolina and retired from the Georgetown County School District in 1985 after thirty-nine years and eleven months of dedicated services.

Edna loved and served Mt. Zion A.M.E Church and the North Santee community faithfully until her health failed. She was a Sunday School teacher for twenty-eight years and for twenty years, served as the trustees' secretary, class leader, and the Director of the Young People's Department (YPD). An active member of the A.M.E. Women's Missionary Society, she served at the local and state level. In the community, she was one of the founding members of Commander Chapter #334 Order of the Eastern Star, a volunteer for voter registration and the South Carolina Council on Aging.

For sixty-three years, until his death on January 14, 2009 she had abided in holy matrimony with Matthew L. Wright, Sr. They were blessed with the births and rearing of two children, Lola Wright Williams and Matthew Wright, Jr. Her children preceded her in death..

Left to cherish lasting memories are six grandchildren, Marla Wright, Houston, TX, Jawana Williams, Charlotte, NC, Tamika Obeng, Chicago, IL., Melisse Doiley, Georgetown, SC, Matthew L. Wright III, Atlanta, GA, and Megan Wright, Houston, TX; five great grandchildren, Jaia Wright, Amariah and Asadah Carter, Marcus Doiley, and Isaiah Obeng.
