Chris Burroughs Obituary

Elinor Judy Gibson, 75, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family, Friday April 14, 2017 at her home. She was born in Newtown, West Virginia to the late Reece Raymond and Mildred Tate Varney on December 29, 1941.

Along with her parents, Judy is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elwood Gibson, and her sister, Martha "Lukie" Ball.

Judy was a graduate of Magnolia High School, and Marshall University. She had a gift for teaching. She was always very active and involved with many community and scholastic events. She was a Black Diamond Girl Scout Leader and became the Cookie Coordinator in Mingo County, West Virginia. She was part of the Woman's West Virginia Democratic Committee. She frequently volunteered her time and became the coordinator for Mingo County Special Olympics. Judy worked and retired from Mingo County West Virginia Board of Education before moving to South Carolina and becoming a teacher for Waccamaw Elementary School for many years before transferring to Georgetown High School.

Following her retirement in 2016 from Howard Adult Education of South Carolina, Judy became an active member of Belin Memorial United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet and was a past member of Matewan United Methodist Church in Matewan, West Virginia. In her free time, Judy relished decorating her house from top to bottom for every holiday and every season. She loved Christmas and collecting Santa Clause figurines. She had a passion for traveling, especially abroad, enjoyed tending her garden and was an enthusiastic sports fan. Most of all, she loved the beach and her family.

Left to cherish Judy's memory is her daughters, Sharon Layne of Samson, AL, and Sherry McCoy and her husband Tim of Georgetown, SC; her grandchildren, Aaron Donahue and his wife Bridgette of Phelps, KY, Maxi Shiflet and her husband John Mark of York, SC, Madison McCoy and her fiancée Alesha of Murrells Inlet, SC as well as four great-grandchildren, Draven, Aeryn-Reece, Alli, and Tripp; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Judy's life will be held at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, 4182 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576, on Sunday April 30, 2017 at 2:30PM as well as Matewan United Methodist Church, 4749 1st Ave, Matewan, WV 25678 on Saturday May 6, 2017 at 11:00AM.

At the request of the family, Memorial Contributions in Judy's name may be made to the Special Olympics, http://www.specialolympics.org/donate-to-charity.aspx

Judy's family wishes to acknowledge the kindness, care and support she received from Iva Coker, Edna Rhea Horne, all of Tidelands Hospice, Sherry Bowker, Lisa Phelan, Ellen Washington, Joy Sanders, Yulanda Holmes and Ashley DesMarteau of Home Care Assistance, Tamias Kenner, as well as their loving neighbors from Fox Chase
