Carl Short Obituary

Commander Carl W. Short, 92, SC USN (Retired) died Sunday, July 23, 2017, at his residence.

Commander Short was born July 27, 1924, in Covington, TN., a son of the late Martin Wise Short and Ora Myrtle Proctor Short. He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1949, with a BBA in Professional Accounting and had a long career in Public Service. He served in the US Navy during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the Navy in 1972, he entered the Public Sector as Director of Finance and Management Information Systems for the City of Georgetown; Myrtle Beach, Horry County, Gainesville, GA and as Comptroller for the Territory of American Samoa and as Financial Consultant for the City of Brady, TX. He served as the South Carolina State Representative to the Government Finance Officers Association of US and Canada for four years.

He was a member of the Government Finance Officers Association of US and Canada; member of the Municipal Treasurers Association of the US and Canada; past President of the SC Municipal Clerks and Finance Officers Association; member of Christ the King Grace Waccamaw Episcopal Church and past Master of Pawleys Island Masonic Lodge #409.

Commander Short with his wife also traveled extensively. He visited many countries during his Navy Career and, since retirement from the Services, had visited all seven Continents, the last being Antarctica in 1998.

In addition to his parents, Commander Short was predeceased by a daughter, Martha Jane Simpson.

Survivors include his wife Alice Ward Letherman Short of Pawleys Island; five children, Reverend Beverly Ann Short, Major, USMC, (Retired) of Lakeland, FL; Nancy June Armstrong of Charleston, SC; Carl Martin Short of Denver, CO; Alice Marie Graham of Pawleys Island; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be at eleven o'clock Friday, July 28, 2017, in Old All Saints Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Timothy D. Suratt assisted by the Rev. Jeffrey Wallace. Burial will follow in the Churchyard.

The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, July 27, 2017, at Christ the King Grace Waccamaw Episcopal Church from two until four o'clock.
