Bertha Davis Obituary

Deaconess/Missionary Bertha McCullough Davis was peacefully called home to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, December 22, 2017. She was born on February 20, 1920 and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James and Mary Nesmith McCullough. The homegoing services were held Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Andrews, SC. Her pastor, Rev. Michael Cannon, officiated the homegoing service and delivered a wonderful eulogy and message of hope. Rev. Dane Harris presided and the Rev. W.C. Ervin III and James H. Cokley shared the old and new testament scriptures from Proverbs 31:10-31 and St. John 14:1-6. The inspirational prayer of comfort was done by the Rev. Willie Gene Davis. Remarks were made by Deacon Gilmore McManus, Deaconess Twila Mays and Missionary Bertha M. Davis' daughter, Sister Emma D. Holmes. Songs 0f celestial praises were sung by Piney Grove Combined Choir, Evangelist Eliza Cumbee, Sister Sharon Harris, the Davis Singers and the awesome young drummers, Tyrell and Tyrea Gamble. The committal -interment and benediction was held at the Piney Grove Cemetery of Andrews, SC.



Mrs.Bertha McCullough married Mr. Timothy Davis, a fine example of a young man, on December 3, 1939. The couple shared many wonderful times together. Their marriage of over 66 years was blessed with the birth and rearing of six children: Frank, Emma, Delores, Patricia, Clyde, and Jannie.



During her early years, Missionary Bertha M. Davis was a member of Mount Zion AME Church, Andrew (Bloomingvale), SC and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Andrews, SC. She was united with Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church after marrying Mr. Timothy Davis. Missionary Davis served in the church in many capacities such as the Deaconess Ministry, the Pastor's Aide Board, the Missionary Board and the Senior and Gospel Choirs. Missionary Davis served faithfully until her health declined. Missionary Davis' dedication to God and her family remained unwavering even during her failing health.



In addition to her parents, Missionary Davis was preceded in death by her loving husband, Mr. Timothy Davis; son, Frank Davis; daughter-in-law (Gloria Faye); and son-in-law, Samuel J. Holmes; five brothers, James, Sam, David, Ulysses, and Robert; and two sisters, Maggie and Flossie.



Missionary Bertha McCullough Davis leaves to cherish and honor her memory, four daughters: Mrs. Emma D. Holmes of Georgetown, SC, Mrs. Delores Atkinson (Ray), of Upper Marlboro, MD; Ms. Patricia Ellington of West Orange, NJ, and Mrs. Jannie Evans (Willis) of Hampton, VA; one son, Mr. Clyde Davis (Renee) of Orange, NJ; two sister-in-laws: Mrs. Willie Mae McCullough of Baltimore, MD and Mrs. Mildred McCullough of Hillside, NJ; an abundance of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, dedicated relatives, and friends which included three special and dedicated caregivers - Mrs. Sara "Bell" Bryant of Sampit, SC, Ms. Barbara Williams of Andrews, SC and Melvina Russ of Moncks Corner, SC and a special friend - Mrs. Carrie Bell Scott of Andrews, SC.



Special thanks to Reverend Michael Cannon, and Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church family; Rev Kelly Spann, II and St. Paul AME Church family for their love, prayers and support.



The family continues to extend sincere thanks and deep gratitude for the expressions of sympathy and acts of kindness and prayers shown during the passing of our own Mrs. Bertha McCullough Davis. Your visits, nourishment, cards, floral arrangements, and acts of kindness are sincerely appreciated. May God continue to bless you.
