David Winans Obituary

Winans, Jr., David Ross
October 9, 1932 - January 28, 2020
David Ross Winans, Jr. of Manasota Key, Englewood, Florida passed away peacefully with his wife at his side on January 28, 2020. He was born in New York City in 1932. His early life was spent in Princeton, NJ, where he attended Miss Fine's School and Princeton Country Day. While summering in Watch Hill, RI, he developed his lifelong passion for sailing. After attending St Mark's School in Southborough, MA where he was an avid ice hockey player, he went on to Princeton University. His studies at Princeton were interrupted by a 4-year stint in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. On returning to Princeton he earned a BA with honors in English. Soon after he married Kathryn Wedemeyer and had three children, one of whom, Wesley, predeceased him.

He was a Publications Manager at Electric Boat, General Dynamics for 37 years, producing all manuals for nuclear and non-nuclear submarines. During this time, he lived in Salem, CT with his second wife, Nancy, whom he married in 1976. They have enjoyed their blended family for 43 years. They retired to Manasota Key in Englewood, Florida where they have resided for 25 years, enjoying summers in Salem with children and grandchildren. He was active in local politics in Salem and was a President of the Manasota Key Association. He loved sailing, golfing, ice skating, and traveling. He wrote poetry and was compiling his memoirs. They spent months each summer in Brittany, France, and traveled extensively throughout Europe. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, four children: David III and wife Vicki of Westerly, RI; Melissa and husband Brian of Fairfax Station, VA; Peter and wife Marina of Salem, CT; Molly and husband Rand of Hartford, CT; and five grandchildren: Steven, Lauren, Amandine, Jesse and Larkin.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Venice on Monday, February 3, at 1pm. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Coastal Wildlife Club of Englewood, Habitat for Humanity, Literacy Volunteers of South Sarasota County or any wildlife organization.

Dear Nan and the entire circle of Dave's family n' friends,

I came up from the Yard to Tech Pubs in June of '81; I was a Tech Writer in one of the groups that reported to Dave as a departmental Chief. Dave was an obvious presence from the start, ready to adjudicate conflicts and give advice, even as he penned his memoir (a long-term project). I remember he gave a retirement speech for one guy in nothing but acronyms and curses! Still, he was genuine...and dependable...and fun! He and his monkey/football props were called on regularly to illustrate some project status. He will be missed, but fondly, having left great memories in his wake!

Understanding the hole left behind, regardless the inevitability or forewarning, pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enablethe grief...which will come...is painfully necessary...but is also a measure of the loving impact this very special man had on everyone! So truly sorry to hear about your husband, father, grandfather, friend. At least now he's at peace with our Lord...definitely keepin' y'all in my prayers!

When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss...inconsolable...she was my mentor! I like to think that I got my character from my father, but my mind and its capacity from m'dear sainted mother!!! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity dearly close...a cherished, hard-won prize...but, in the interim, that answer lies below.

SELFISH TEARS
(I Eulogize My Beloved Mother - March, 1989)

Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!

We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!

So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!

Such a sad time...the passing of Dave.
I haven't seen him in many years, but I always think of him with wonderful memories of days gone by.
Dave was my first supervisor when I started working at Electric Boat. He was a great boss, and dear friend. The most down-to-earth ivy-leaguer you could ever meet.
My sincere condolences to Nancy and all of Dave's family. So happy to read that you all have had a wonderful life, filled with great memories to help in your sadness.
