Thomas Lloyd Obituary
Thomas William Lloyd, 91, of West Columbia, SC passed away at home on July 10, 2025.
Born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, he was the middle child to Ruth and William (Bill) Lloyd. He is predeceased by an older brother, James Lloyd, and is survived by his younger sister, Virginia Lloyd Williams and her husband Richard of Mesa, AZ.
Tom is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marilyn Bennett Lloyd; his son, Stephen J. Lloyd of Greenville, Susan L. Ballentine and husband John of Cayce, along with their children, Daphne Branham and husband, Mark (Haven, Everly and Lyla) and Joshua W. Ballentine and wife, Beth (Haddie); Stuart B. Lloyd, Sr. and wife, Penney of Prince Frederick, Maryland, along with their children, Stuart B. Lloyd, Jr. and wife, Muse (Lina and Louise), William J. Lloyd, and Robert M. Lloyd and wife, Elsa (Aubrey, John, Joe, Jade and Jack); and Sherrill L. Clarkson and husband, Hal of Columbia, along with their children, Justin K. Clarkson and wife, Katherine (Henry), Ryan J. Clarkson, Kristen H. Shumpert and husband, Justin (Tanner and Thomas), Allison L. Hallman, and Lauren H. Phifer and husband, Chris.
Tom graduated from Mt. Clemens High School in 1953 where he was the drum major of the band. He was a member of the ATO fraternity at Adrian College, later transferred to Michigan State University and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Forest Products. While at Michigan State, he worked for the Dean & Harris Ford Co. to support his wife and children. Upon graduation, he was employed as the Assistant Director by the Pennsylvania Mobile Home Association and later employed as the Executive Director of the Manufactured Housing Institute of South Carolina for 20 years. He served for many years under the Lt. Governor for the S.C Silver Haired Legislature and was its Speaker from 2003 - 2007.
Tom was raised as a member of the Methodist Church. He was active in the youth group, met Marilyn at church and they were married in the First Methodist Church of Mt. Clemens, MI. They became members of Trinity United Methodist Church shortly after moving into the SC area and have remained members to this day.
The family would like to express our grateful thanks to Amedysis Home Health during the past few months for their wonderful, caring service, and to Amedysis Hospice for being available when they were truly needed.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 11:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1201 Mohawk Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169. Visitation will be held immediately following the service. A family graveside service will be held at a later time.
Memorials can be made to Trinity or a donation of choice in his honor.
