Sigrid Hyman Obituary

Sigrid Hansen Childers Hyman, 90, passed from this life to the next on January 16, 2026. Born in Mobile, AL the youngest child of Gunnar Hansen and Elida Marie Nelson, she was predeceased by her parents, siblings Marie Hansen and Gunnar Hansen (Diana), and rst husband, Richard L. Childers.

Sigrid, a ectionately known to family and friends as Sig, is survived by her husband J. Charles (Charlie) Hyman; daughters Elaine C. Thompson (Ernie) and Janet C. Burts (Richard); and step-children Lisa H. Lane, Suzanne Hyman (Thom Mobley), and CJ Hyman (Leslie). Sig and Charlie were blessed with a combined nine grandchildren: Meagan Thompson (Daniel), Richard

Thompson (Lane Krause), Gunnar Burts (Nichole), Walker Burts, Gri n Burts, Rixon Lane (Samantha), Colby Lane, Josh Hyman (Paige), and Casey H. Drans eld (Zach); and a combined nine great-grandchildren: Davis, Jack, Bowen, Campbell, Leila, Carter Banks, Parker, Jackson, and Peyton.

Sig graduated from Huntingdon College in Alabama in 1956 and later earned a Masters in Science from the University of Tennessee in home economics with a specialty in textiles. As a homemaker, she continued to enjoy sewing and all kinds of crafts and participated in her "Hobbies" group for 50+ years. Sig was an active member at Shandon Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and in numerous other positions, singing in the choir and playing handbells. She was active in her circle and was honored to receive the Honorary Life Membership.

With her rst husband Richard, Sig lived in Hamburg, Germany for a time and made many friends that she remained in touch with over the years. She was always up for adventure and thrilled the grandchildren when she rode the Tower of Terror at Disney with them years ago. She also showed them that she could still walk on stilts and go tubing in the sound in Wilmington.

Sig's father immigrated from Stockholm, Sweden as a young man and her mother came from a family that immigrated from Sweden in previous generations. Sig was proud of her Swedish heritage and connected with family in Sweden, visiting there and also hosting Swedish relatives here. Grands and great-grands called her Mormor, Swedish for mother's mother. She made and shared sourdough bread that the family loved and called Mormor's bread.

Sig and Charlie enjoyed travelling near and far and shared many wonderful adventures together.

They loved supporting the Lady Gamecocks, going to home games and later watching every game at home. Sig enjoyed being active and participated in her exercise class into her late 80's. Taking classes and joining with friends at Shepherd's Center was also an important part of Sig's life.

There will be a service of witness to the resurrection and to celebrate Sig's life on Saturday, February 7 at 2:00 pm at Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow St., Columbia, SC 29205. The service will also be live streamed at https://www.youtube.com/@ShandonPresbyterian.

Mrs. Hyman was a beautiful woman of very few words and beautiful smile. It was a pleasure meeting her, husband ( Charlie), daughter's Janet and Elaine ,that was there to the very end.

Sig was quick to welcome and befriend new neighbors. She always kept watch out and picked up mail for those who might be out of town. She was outgoing and kind, always ready for a chat - a good friend! Sig leaves a big hole in the hearts of all who knew her. She and Charlie both have been wonderful next-door neighbors.
God be with her sweet family and Charlie.

Sig was a loved and helpful member of our Grace Hill Road neighborhood since she and Charlie moved in over a decade ago. She spoke kind words and cared about the people she encountered. Her smile and sense of humor were memorable. Sig will be missed and remembered and we can only hope her Christian faith that has led her to eternity with God rubbed off on all of us.
