Shala Barrs Obituary

Shala Nichole "Shay" Barrs, 37, was welcomed into Heaven on May 8, 2025, in West Columbia, South Carolina. She passed away at home comfortably and at peace, surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 10, 1987, in Columbia, South Carolina, Shay lived a life defined by her deep faith, love for her family, and passion for the outdoors. A proud graduate of Airport High School's Class of 2006, Shay also pursued her passion for beauty and self-expression through cosmetology school from 2004 to 2006. Her creativity and dedication were evident in everything she did, whether styling hair or spending time with those that she loved most. Shay was a woman of unwavering faith-a devoted daughter of Christ who cherished her Bible and found strength in her relationship with God. She attended church faithfully until illness made it too difficult to go. Her spiritual devotion was a guiding light throughout her life and a source of comfort to those around her. Family was the cornerstone of Shay's world. She is lovingly remembered by her father James Barrs; her mother Mary (David) Barrs; her brothers Daniel Barrs and Adam Barrs; and her sisters Cassondra Sessions and Savannah Prosser. Though she had no children of her own, Shay embraced the role of aunt with open arms and a full heart-treating her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather Jo Murray David, paternal grandfather Wesley Barrs, and paternal grandmother Daisey (Busbee) Teusch. Shay's vibrant spirit came alive in the great outdoors. Whether riding her side-by-side through wooded trails, casting a line while fishing, or enjoying anything water-related, she found joy in nature's embrace. Her happiest moments were spent surrounded by family-laughing around a campfire or sharing stories under the open sky. Those who knew Shay will remember her as courageous and brave - a beautiful soul whose friendliness touched everyone she met. Her loyalty to family and strength through adversity left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family will receive friends at Woodridge Mausoleum Chapel on Monday May 12th from 1:00-2:00pm. A Funeral Service to honor Shay's life will follow at 2:00pm with Rev. David Spears officiating. Internment will be at Woodridge Mausoleum Chapel. Family will also receive friends at the home of Cassondra Sessions' at 4:00pm following the service. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Shala Barrs, to South Carolina Oncology Associates, Cancer Care Center in Columbia, SC | SC Oncology Associates where Shala received amazing care, support and courageously fought the fight of her life.
