Raphael Martin Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Raphael Anthony Martin, age 65, of Columbia, South Carolina, who passed away on August 22, 2025. Born on September 19, 1959, in St. George's, Grenada, he was the beloved son of the late Venis Malcom Martin and Jean Albertina Andrews Martin, whose guidance and values helped shape the man he became. Raphael lived a life of service, dedication, and unwavering love for his family. Raphael proudly served his country in the United States Army for 20 years, from June 1979 up until June of 1999, specializing in Field Artillery. He served with distinction in Operation Desert Storm, and throughout his military career, he received numerous honors recognizing his outstanding leadership and expert marksmanship. While serving, he also pursued his education, earning his Associate's, Bachelor's, and Master's degrees in Business Management. Following his honorable retirement from the Army, Raphael continued his commitment to public service as a Mail Handler with the United States Postal Service. He worked there faithfully for nearly 21 years and was planning to retire in just seven months. He was known for his integrity and strong work ethic, Raphael's colleagues will remember him for his sarcastic humor, quick wit, and the joy he brought to the workplace. Outside of work, Raphael loved the outdoors. In his younger years, he enjoyed soccer, racquetball, tennis, and fishing-always embracing life with energy and enthusiasm. His memory is cherished and will be remembered by his devoted wife, Yon Sik Martin of over 40 years, along withhis beloved daughter, Patricia Martin; cherished grandchildren, Hannah Reyes, Alisha Gilley, and Da'Hyun Reyes; sister, Janice Williams; and brothers, Wayne Martin, Liam Martin, and John Martin. Raphael was a man of strength, heart, and generosity-a devoted provider and fierce protector of his family. He was always there when his loved ones needed him, ready with wisdom, support, and unconditional love. To his daughter, he wasn't just a father-he was a hero. Services to honor Raphael's life will be held at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC 29223.
