Helen was an avid steward of her timberland property in Calhoun County, just north of St. Matthews. I am a consulting forester who got to know Helen and her late husband Richard in the 1980´s. Together we managed her diverse 750 acres. Pines, hardwoods, and seven ponds.
There were many challenges
but Helen always made good decisions. Keeping the property in full timber production while retaining the aesthetically beautiful pastures and ponds. Several times each year I would go with Helen, Richard, and their granddaughter Margaret to ride and walk the property, analyzing management choices and enjoying the outdoors. The beavers were a nuisance in the creeks and ponds, cutting down trees, blocking culverts, flooding and killing timber. She installed one of the first "Clemson Levelers", a drainage device that fools the beavers. Eventually her son Erik and I had to enlist a trapper to control the beaver population, but we kept that under raps, Helen loved all the animals.
Over time she was more than just a client, she was a good friend, a person who listened and cared about me and all those around her she knew.
She was a true southern lady.
I was blessed to have known her.
