Barbara Spruell Obituary
Barbara Morgan Spruell, a beloved mother, devoted church member, creative spirit, and radiant soul, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 28, 2025, in Columbia, South Carolina, where she spent most of her life. She was born on September 20, 1945, in New Bern, North Carolina, the beloved daughter of the late Marvin Lewis Morgan and Hattie Allen.
Barbara's life was a beautiful expression of compassion, creativity, and faith. She was the cherished wife of the late Willie Spruell and the loving mother of Chernise Spruell, with whom she shared an extraordinary bond. To her daughter, she was not only a nurturing mother but a best friend, a confidante, and a source of constant love, laughter, and strength. Their relationship was deeply rooted in mutual joy and understanding - a connection that felt more like soulmates than simply mother and child.
Barbara had a gift for making spaces beautiful and hearts lighter. She loved to decorate and poured that joy into designing bulletin boards and displays for two churches over many years. A longtime and faithful member of Sidney Park CME Church, Barbara was known as a "master arts creator" and served as Stewardess president for several years. Her creative touch brought light to every holiday and celebration, and her generous heart touched all who knew her. As one church member lovingly shared, "Her presence brought light and warmth to every room and her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved her." She was a woman of deep faith, a prayer warrior, and a constant source of comfort and encouragement to others. Her spirituality was not just professed, it was lived through service, kindness, and quiet strength.
Barbara was also a devoted caregiver. She lovingly cared for her husband during his Alzheimer's journey and for her mother when she needed daily support. Her compassion and commitment to those she loved were steadfast and full of grace.
Barbara also loved to travel, host social gatherings, share lunch with dear friends, and read. She had a sharp wit and a vibrant sense of humor, often making up words just to make people laugh which is a testament to her joy-filled spirit. She worked out regularly at the community center and found joy in staying active and connected.
She leaves behind a legacy of faith, generosity, joy, and service - a life well-lived and a heart wide open.
In addition to her daughter Chernise, Barbara is survived by her son-in-law, Stefan Platamone, and a host of loving and caring extended family members, friends, and church family, all of whom will carry her memory with love and gratitude.
Barbara Spruell will be remembered as a warm, compassionate, uplifting presence whose laughter, faith, and love touched every corner of her world.
