Amy Spagnola Obituary

Amy Hinson Spagnola - beloved daughter and sister, devoted patient advocate, invaluable friend, and proud curator of inappropriate jokes-has left us far too soon. Born in Lancaster, SC, on Friday the 13th of April, 1962 (which, given her love of the macabre, was not only fitting but hilarious to her), she lived a life marked by bold humor, fierce loyalty, and the kind of charisma that could light up a hospital hallway-or a pool hall. For over 30 years, Amy Spag, as she was known by all, ruled the corridors of Richland Hospital as its unofficial mayor. As a patient advocate, she gave voice to those who needed it most, helping countless patients and their families with grace, grit, and a twinkle in her eye. Her laugh-deep, full-bodied, and impossible to ignore-was medicine in itself. Her circle of friends was wide and loyal, likely because she had a gift for making everyone feel like her favorite. She carried the ache of early loss throughout her life with strength and candor. She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Nancy Gregory Hinson, her adored younger sister, Julia Beth Hinson, and her father, Charles Harris Hinson. Their absence shaped her but never dimmed her spark. If anything, it made her even more determined to live loudly, laugh often and dance whenever possible-preferably to Nirvana or The White Stripes. Amy Spag will be remembered for many things: her rock and roll soul, her intelligence and wit, and her big bright beautiful smile. Amy is survived by her brother, Joseph Charles Hinson, and by her niece and nephew, Jenna Alexis Hinson and Michael Anthony Hinson. In her honor, please play some music you love, laugh out loud and unabashedly, and tell someone you love them in a voice that carries. She would've liked that. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to an Alzheimer's research organization-or be kind to someone having a rough day. That was her true legacy. A celebration of Amy's life will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Siebels House and Garden1601 Richland St. Columbia, SC 29201.
