Michael T. Morrissey, Sr., 78, of Laflin, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Friday, Jan. 19, 2024. He fought a courageous five-month battle with cancer.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, July 21, 1945, he was the son of late Gerard and Florence Helfrich Morrissey.
Mike was a 1963 graduate of GAR Memorial High School, proudly served in the U.S. Air Force attaining the rank of sergeant and entered into the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in 1968. He was a member of the 1970 State Police Rodeo Team. Mike retired from Troop R Dunmore after 28 years of service and began another career as a court security officer in the Federal courthouse in Wilkes-Barre for 16 years.
After retirement, he was able to enjoy traveling with the love of his life, Mary Jane. Above all, Mike was a loving husband, father, Pop to his grandchildren, brother and uncle. When you met Mike, you had a friend for life. He looked forward to annual family beach vacations and all of his grandchildren's sporting events. He was always his children's and grandchildren's biggest fan. Mike was a die-hard Notre Dame and Yankees fan, a member of the Notre Dame Club and a member of the Knights of Columbus Pittston Council 372, 4th Degree. The Morrissey men were a Knights of Columbus bowling dynasty for over 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Molly Ann Morrissey; and siblings, Mary Ann Skammer, Rose Mary Alfieri, Gerard, Christine Obenski, Robert, Thomas, Kathleen and Joseph.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Jane Curley Morrissey, Laflin; daughter, Michelle Kearney and husband, Tim, Clarks Summit; son, Michael Morrissey and wife, Jen, Archbald; grandchildren, Morgan, Matthew, Mia, Ryan, Colin, Carter and Austin; siblings, John Morrissey, San Jose, Calif.; Irene Palmer and her husband, William, Temperance, Mich.; Ellen Morrissey, Forty Fort; and Gert Morrissey-Pryor and her husband, Lew, Dallas; brother-in-law, Gerald Curley and his wife, Ann; and several nieces and nephews.
Mike's family would like to extend love and gratitude to the amazing staff on 3 South Allied Services Skilled Nursing Facility, Scranton, for the exceptional care he was given in the last few weeks of his life. You will all hold a special place in our hearts forever.
A Mass of Christian Burial, followed with military honors accorded by the U.S. Air Force and the Plains Twp. American Legion, Post 558, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Maria Goretti Church, 42 Redwood Drive, Laflin, with the Rev. Alex Roche, pastor, officiating. The Parish Rosary Group will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and rosary in the church 30 minutes before the Mass. All are invited to attend. Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday.
